RH Axle bearing

Post by apk »

SW20 3S GTE
I dropped my car into the workshop with it's nasty banging noises & the inner bearing on the right-hand driveshaft has disintegrated - stuffing up the oil seals at the transaxle of course.
The mechanic is unsure of the model for ordering replacement parts as the car has no VIN plate.
My question is, is there any difference in the parts needed for different generations of the SW20? He has to order from Bangkok & it'd be nice to get the right parts first time.

IIRC the VIN should be stamped into the front bulkhead in the frunk.

It won't have a VIN if it's an JDM car, it will have a Frame number. They are different. VIN codes contain specific information about where the car was made, by who, etc. and can be 'decoded' to spit all this information out without having to look it up with the manufacturer. Frame numbers are just a sequential serial number which have to be looked up in the manufacturers database to obtain the same information. At the time our cars were made a VIN was only a requirement in the USA and the EU.

But yes, the frame number is engraved / stamped into the frunk, just below the windscreen.

Which bearing is it that you mean exactly, the bearing that supports the driveshaft 2/3rds of the way along it where it bolts to the block, or one in the gearbox?

Hi Toxo,
It's the bearing 2/3rds of the way along the shaft that needs replacing.
I need to know if there are any variants between a '91 & say a '94 model.

I know where the chassis number is but that doesn't show the engine type on it & Toyota are too thick to search by engine type or chassis number - they fill in fields in a computer & when it asks for a VIN that's all they want to know.

My problem identifying the vehicle age & engine is that older cars like this were often bought as the basic model & upgraded later - it may be an NA chassis with a JDM turbo engine fitted later. The instrument cluster is definitely from a NA car. (no boost gauge)
I'm hoping I can tell my mechanic it doesn't matter so long as it is a SW20 part?

They are all the same on turbos. Part 90369-41001

NAs don't have them but loads of other toyotas use the same bearing to support the drive shaft so should be easy to get and it's not too expensive.
