Alternator help needed!

Post by DaveM89 »

Hi, I had a previous post saying I've recently bought an mr2 and discovered the alternator tensioner was hanging off! Further investigation this morning has found that the pivot bolt which I guess holds te alternator in was missing?! Have got some bolts to replace the missing ones, but can't get the whole thing to line up!
Having great difficulty, the pivot bolt won't thread in and the adjusting lock bolt won't line up through the slatted guide.
Any ideas?

Just fitted a new alternator to mine yesterday and I found lining the lower pivot bolt up was easier from underneath the car using a small scredriver in the whole first wiggle it about until it feels loose then try sliding the bolt through.

I used the same method for the adjuster bolt in the guide slot on the top and moved the alternator as far back as possible towards the rear of the car working from the top of the car to do this one. Make sure belt is in place first before doing up any bolts.

Hope this helps

I finally lined mine up by pushing it up, when the whole time i was convinced i should have been pusing it down!

Yeah definitely push up!

I've done 3 alt changes and it does get easier. A trick I learnt - not just for this but anything like - is to use a screwdriver and very carefully (making small adjustments) line the holes right up. The pressure of the alt should hold it fairly tight. Took me 30 mins first time but 5 mins the last time! Just practice.
