mr2 sills- going to have a go (also respray)

Post by dylan5084 »

my mechanic has just informed me that my car is going to fail its MOT due to the hole in the sill...

im going to have a go- as im a welder after all. just bought me some KA sills and all the stuff required to go ahead with this hell of a task!

its a scary thought hacking into my car with a grinder

its not been for its mot yet as its in the process of getting the gearbox front strut steering rack, and a rake of bushes along with fuel lines and brake lines being replaced, will update with some pics as i go along once i get the car back!

i just hope the 10 days to get it back to the MOT station is enough!!

Dont forget to repair the inner structure aswell. These sills rot from the inside out and there are about 4 peices of metal coming together that will be rotted through. I made up cardboard templates then bent up the peices I needed, had to cut a much larger hole in the outside to access all the work on the inside.

ive just done mine. did a bit of a build thread if you want to take a look...

http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/forum/show ... hp?t=41224

i couldnt find loads of photos of what to expect, but sometimes its handy to have an idea of where youre going to cut through something else behind the outer etc. so might be of use to you!

Good luck.

Hi new on here and have a scary amount of rot around the rear box section which im roughly prepared to do, also prepared to break if it becomes a complete lost cause, upon stripping out the inside of the car ive come across more rot on the inside just to the sides of the plastic box behind the seats, the metal bracket that the box bolts to is bolted directly to the area i mean, ive grinded 1 side back and welded a bit of .9 in and with the bracket bolts shearing has kinda saved the threds, provided they drill out ok, cant put pics up yet and will have to figure that out 1c i can but if anyone knows the area i mean i need to know if this area is chassis rail? Or if i can get to the other side of the area ive welded if i cut through the sill and box section? this will be alot clearer 1c i can post a pic so please bare with me

finished off one side, took the opportunity waxoyl her to and found more areas to repair, hah. been getting tucked into the other side, thought the otherside was worse by looking at the outside of the sill. but its better on the inside than the previous side :thumleft: thats easy for me to say.

you can see from the pics theres been some dodgy repairs, cataloye etc, managed to knock some big holes with a hammer before removal.

Good work there Dylan, another Two saved.

I like the way you say quite casually, 'got it sorted in a shift' :D it would take me that long to strip one side of the car down.
As mentioned keep us posted on your progress. :thumleft:
