[Mk2] [NA] Main fan not cutting in - what to check? non A/C

Post by 9000rpm »

I took my car for an MOT yesterday and was having trouble getting it to pass emissions. while doing this we noticed the engine temp getting very near the red on the gauge and the main rad fan had not kicked in so had to abort the test.

I got home and checked the fan by giving it 12v and it was fine.

I unplugged the temp sensor on the radiator and could hear a relay clicking in the fusebox but still no fan coming on. there is a spare fan connector on the RHS of the rad (guess this is for an AC car) which gets 12V when you unplug the temp sensor but the other connector connected to the fan on the LHS gets nothing? on a non AC car, should the fan be on the left or right hand side?

I checked all the fuse and everything was fine with all in place an none blown.

what else can I check?

roughly where on the temp gauge should the main fan kick in?

got to fix this before even getting it through the emissions test some how.

cheers guys

right, think I have found it. the fan has been fitted back on the wrong side at some point it its life and is connected to the AC connector!

so think thats an easy fix!

just need to get it back from the garage who are trying to find why its failing on emissions.
