[Mk2] [NA] Brake Calipers

Post by KurtSmart »

I've had my brake calipers seize for the second year now, first time i just bought used calipers but this time i'm thinking of repair kits for all calipers, has anyone tried these? if so do they last or is it a temp thing

The results using the kits are mixed. I've rebuilt my front set about 5 years ago. No problems whatsoever. In fact I only replaced the seals on the bottom pistons as they were the only ones sticking - so one kit repaired both calipers.

However I've had to repair the rear offside twice! Not pleased, so I bought a reconditioned caliper from a local trusted motor factor. It cost me £65 which is effectively a little over twice the price of a repair kit. Clearly re-manufactured to a high standard with new seals new piston and the caliper was media blasted and painted.

That was about a year ago. Would I bother with the kits again? I don't think so. To buy the kit plus new pistons would cost almost as much as a re-conditioned caliper (mine came with a 2 year guarantee).

No contest.

Fully stripped down and properly rebuilt they should last a good few years.
