[Mk2] [NA] Which induction/filter?

Post by HighwayStar »

So... had a Pipercross cone induction on for 5 yrs or so and it maybe could do with retirement. What other options do I have though... K&N, Apexi, Pipercross again... maybe this time with a cold air feed? Or do I go back to a standard air box and if I did what filter? Only other engine mods are Blueflame exhaust and decay.
Suggestions, advice and experience gratefully received.

Cheers

Replace it based on the noise you want to hear, you won't see any change in performance...I quite like the BMC airfilters, bit pricey, but the idea of a cold air, enclosed filter does appeal :thumleft:

I generally like pipercross induction kits, they sound good if an open cone. Depends what you want nose wise. If you want it loud you don't want a standard airbox or enclosed filter with cold feed.
My first NA had a HKS superpowerflow with the HKS hardpipe. It was the best sounding kit I've heard on an mr2. Filtration is supposed to be poor on anything foam though.
Pipercross also do a venom induction kit which is a cheaper version of the viper.

Filter wise you won't go wrong with a K&N. :thumleft:

When I got my 2nd mr2, I couldn't wait to get that induction noise I had on my first. I loved that bottom end whistle when breathing on the throttle, and the throaty roar at the top end. I fitted a K&N 57i induction kit and within a month I'd taken it back off and went back to stock. It created one hell of a flat spot that was just impossible to live with. Popped the standard intake back on, kept the cold air feed pipe and rigged it to the standard pick up and I'm so much happier knowing when I put my foot down the engine will respond. Noise isn't everything, Toyota put all those intake boxes on for a reason. My advise would be if you want to modify air intake at all, pop a k&n panel filter in, keep the standard intake boxes. Dont risk spending money on something which potentially could upset the running of your engine.

Im a fan of the HKS hybrid panel. I think the BLITZ one is meant to be pretty decent. more preferance, and the fact cones get heatsoaked.

But then, thats just me.

Apexi are the best in my opinion if you can find one :thumleft:
