Discussion and technical advice the SW20 MR2. 3S-GTE, 3S-GE, 3S-FE etc
Anything and everything to do with maintenance, modifications and electrical is in here for the Mk2.
well some of you may know my gearbox had a problem with reverse and 5th.
it happened on the motorway in 5th, it got stuck in 5th and i had to yank it out and then i lost use of reverse too
after the car sitting for 4 weeks not turning a wheel ive went out and managed to get reverse and im pretty sure i got 5th (i cant take it for a spin as ive no insurance)
its still hard to get reverse, im just wondering is there anything i can do to remedy this? i dont really want to be spending money getting buying a box and having it fitted
advice appreciated
On my old tubby that was the first step towards new gearbox, had to yank it out of 3rd I think then other gears slowly started dying.
Only thing to do is check the cables are tightly connected, suppose that could be a possible cause.
it sounds like you could have clutch drag to me. Does the gear engagement feel normal when the engine is switched off?
I'd be checking the slave and master cylinder for leaks before a gearbox

The 5th gear drive breaks and most times comes out the passenger end of the gearbox casing. Take the rear passenger wheel off and have a look at the gearbox end for a hole or cracks

it doesnt no.
ill be moving house on sat and have a double garage now so will have a good butchers in the next couple of weeks
where would i get a new set of bushes etc as id want to change these when it gets a new box anyway
what about first time with no knowledge of how it comes out?
Significantly significantly longer and probably with a few bits left your on your drive after that you don't have a clue what to do with
In all seriousness it's a big job - if you don't have a clue (and probably all of the necessary tools) I would either get it done by a professional or get a hand from someone who has done it before. If you still want to do it yourself, with no knowledge I'd set aside 3-5 days
I separated my old engine and box last week,it was out of the car already and wasnt the easiest. Made me realise how hard it would be to remove and replace a gearbox and get everything's back together correctly. Definately one for someone who knows what they are doing.
