MK2 MR2 (take 2) And inevitably a few questions...

Post by man-in-the-box »

Hi all, just picked up a '95 mk2 n/a yesterday. It needs a bit of work doing but I'm hoping to be driving around in it soon :)

Its my second mk2,having previously owned a rev5. And I forgot how nice they are to drive, until yesterday. For the last year or so, I've had a few mx5's (which although very fun to drive), really lack power.

So the to do list on the new car is:
-Replace rad
-Replace o/s front wing
-Replace o/s headlamp cover
-Sort the leaky tbar seals
-Oil change, filter, front pads etc.

I've seen some alloy rads on ebay, but was just wandering if anyone's fitted one before, and if the mounting holes are in the right place etc. or if it would be better to replace with a standard one?

Also, the car's brooklands green, so does anyone know where I could get the body panels from in the right colour? I tried to respray a front bumper once and it looked bloody awful, so learnt that lesson fairly quickly.

Thanks in advance for any help/advice

also, seems to have a cold start issue.

started it up this evening, ran for about a minute, then cut out.

tried restarting it, the engine would crank but not fire,

put my foot lightly on the accelerator, and it started up but had to keep my foot on it, or it would cut out again.

So, off came the induction kit, and I noticed that the throttle body was full of black gunk. Took the throttle body off and gave it a good clean. Re-assembled it and it started up fine and didn't cut out. Although the idle does seem to fluctuate quite a lot. Could this be a case of air being in the coolant system? hence giving the engine temp sensor different readings??

Cold idle fluctuating may be related to your coolant level.

When I bought my last rev3 it was doing this:-

Topped up the coolant level and it stopped fluctuating. Few weeks later it did it again; turned out to be a pinhole in the rad only leaking when hot.

Theory is when cold the coolant level is below the ECU temp sensor, as it gets hot and up to pressure the waterpump surges water above the temp sensor and back down again, sending erratic signals to the ECU on the temperature level. When hot the coolant covers the temp sensor and the idle returns to normal.
