Rust Proofing?

Post by Ridge Racer »

Hi chaps!

I've just purchased (as some of you probably already know) my third mrk 1... here is it:

Image

Not a great picture... but its a very tidy car indeed! Very very solid and i want to keep it that way!

Which brings me to the reason for this post... what is the best way to rust proof a mrk 1? I've been looking at waxing the underside of the car but that seems to just trap water in i hear??

What is the best thing to do?

I'm also on my third mr2 mk1 and its also a 1986 mk1b

mine pretty dam solid just had its mot and no issues ,rustproofing lol
mine just doesnt go out in the rain and has a warm garage

waxoyle down all those gaps from the boot down the arches ,in the a and b posts ,waxoyle everywhere lol ,mines been saved by waxoyle and garaged by the previous owner ,if yours is in good condition there will be waxoyle all over it ,because its the only way to save these cars

Fertan, por 15 and waxoil is what's gone onto mine and in that order.

Fertan stuff was great for all the cavaties to stabilise anything that was starting, waxoil to keep the moisture out. Por 15 on all the suspension components (although powder coating would be better)
I also used schultz on the inner arches and on the underside where the original stuff had come away / damaged.

Not had it out on the road as still building back up but i did some of the original repairs nearly 3 years ago and they seem to still be solid.

Down to metal strip, POR-15, brush on underseal and then sprayed with Tetraschutz plus Dinitrol Corromax into all cavities and insides of panels is what mine is getting.

I would strongly advise stripping all the old stuff from the underside as mine looked and felt solid but once it was all stripped off I found rust and holes where it had failed and started to trap moisture.

Anything less is really just buying time based on my experience so it is a question of how far you want to go.
