[Mk2] [Turbo] Disc Scoring

Post by Harold »

Hello chaps,

Last weekend I changed the front discs and pads and this week i've experienced an odd grinding noise when manuevering on full lock.

I pulled everything apart again and I found that the drivers side inner brake pad was lodged firmly in the bracket, it required a fair bit of force to remove, all the other pads slide into the retaining clips quite easily. This is what I think the cause of the grinding noise is:

You can see how the score marks on the disc match up with the pad.

I could see no other signs of causes of grinding, I've removed a bit of metal on the base of one of the pad retaining clips which gave enough room for the pad to slide in easily, rather than having to hammer it in.

I'm thinking that as the pad was so tightly sitting in the bracket the top lip was kept in contact with the discs even when not braking?

What do you guys think?

yeah I had that problem before with my pads being really tight in there. I actually used a file and removed some of the metal from the mounting lugs on the pads so they just clipped in smoothly and could be removed easily with my finger. I figured once the caliper was bolted over the top nothing was going to move except when the caliper wanted it too.

I had exactly the same issue. I think general dirt and corrosion form on the lip and excessive paint on the pad causes an excessivley tight fit. Same solution used the file on the lips and pad and all well. Common problem

When I removed my calipers to refurbish them I found that a previous owner had painted the carriers where the spring clips sit, this layer of paint and build up of corrosion had caused the pads to be almost stuck solid in the spring clips.

I'd fit new spring clips and make sure where they sit in the carriers is free from paint and rust.
