Newby speedo conversion question

Post by Nick »

Hello all , my first post. Sorry for it being a newby question thats probably already been asked a million times . Tried the search but no joy :(

Ive been stalking the classifieds for a while looking to become an mr2 owner . Found what looks to be a decent turbo one not too far away so I`m going to look this weekend.

My question is whats the best mod for the speedo mph conversion. Ive read the best one you can`t buy any more and that most (all??) others affect the power steering.
I don`t want something that affects the steering and I don`t care if its costs a few quid (within reason) to have it right.

My only other dilemma is Ive also spotted a nice looking na mr2 so I`m a bit split which way to go . Don`t suppose thats a question any one but myself can answer and I`m split 50/50 at the mo :-k :-k

The only converters that were available for years simply converted to speedo signal as they were supposed to do. One result of the signal conversion was that the PAS doesn't cut out at around 50mph, because that speed signal was converted too.

Then a guy brought out an "intelligent" conveter. This converted the speed signal, but not the PAS.

He no longer makes them, so we are back with "normal" converters.

I wouldn't worry about the converter type. There are thousands of MR2s around the country without the "intelligent" converter and most people wouldn't know the difference anyway.

you'll kick yourself if you go N/A, especially if you drive a turbo after you buy one!!

just drive it in KM's, 50kms is 30mph etc....takes about a week to get used to :thumleft:

EDIT:there's also a million speedo apps for android/iphone etc...

IMHO, get it converted (it will probably already be converted). At least your car will be legal.

it's rare they're not converted. do they not need MPH clocks for their first SVA test when they come off the boat??

Yep, they do. And probably did. And then the cars got into the hands of the general public...

Cheers Fellas.
I can`t put a link yet but do I just want one of the ebay converters that cost £30 ?

I think your right sheppy, if I go na I`ll just wish I`d gone turbo. Ive got a leon cupra at the mo so would probably miss the turbo.

The turbo I`m going to look at is defiantly in kph at the mo . Sounds a bit too good to be true but the seller says its only done 46,000 km. I`ll know more by the weekend. And maybe be posting pictures of my new car if it looks kosher :)

Its too old to need an sva. I imported a Mitsubishi j53 a few years ago and thats still in kph. No sva as it was over 10 years old and it passes mot`s no trouble

46000kms?? no chance mate. not unless it's a proper concourse condition one and he's after 15k for it. that only equals about 30,000 miles

I know , Sounds odd to me too .Its fresh off the boat. Maybe he missed a 1 off the front of the mileage  It is a crappy colour so not worth top dollar.

I`ll have a look anyway as its only down the road and at leased it will give me an idea what Im looking at .
If this ones crap I might just import one myself but the exchange rate isn`t so great as it was a few years ago. I can get a nice one in japan for about £2-2.5 grand with around 60,000 miles on the clock add about another grand or so for shipping and tax.

I see you're in Chesterfield. If car looks good, and you want me to take a look over it, PM me. I'm in Barnsley, not far away. Cover my petrol and we can sort something out.

what revision is it?? they do tend to have lower mileage when freshly imported (wether it's importers lying about it or not is another thing i guess) but 46000kms is stupidly low, you can only have a look, the condition of the car may well suggest it has only done that many miles, :thumleft:

there's plenty over here for sale anyway, very very nice rev3 tubby in the for sale section for 2400 at the moment, :thumleft:

EDIT: link added.

Wow that`s a really nice offer. The cars in sheffield so about 1/2 way between us . If you don`t mind can you pm me your number so I can give you a call ? If its convenient it would be great to have someone take a look at it for piece of mind .

The seller says its a rev4 . its a 96 plate so I think it might be a 3 ? not really sure and don`t really care as long as its decent. Condition is whats most important to me. I would buy a poo brown one if it was a nice car

The white one looks nice . Bit of a run for me though and I try not to drive too far for cars as I seam to buy them anyway that way to make the journey worth while . I prefer to find them local enough that its easy to walk away if there are any funny feelings.

hmmm, could be a decent one you're onto then, just make sure to hold the seller over the coals regarding the mileage, also, Peter at sbits is a top bloke, deffo take him up on his offer, he's helped me out numerous times over the phone even though i only bought a 12 quid fuel cut defender off him :thumleft: :thumleft:

If it's an import rev 4, it'll have an air bag in the dash on the passenger side.
