My Rev 3 Turbo

Post by DangerJim »

Hi, I picked up a 96 Rev 3 Turbo just over a week ago and I love it. I've had 2 S13s and an R33 previously and I much prefer the MR2.

It's a tin top with a mongoose exhaust, mandrel bent downpipe, apexi filter, HKS ssqv BOV, greddy boost controller at 1.1 bar, ARC intercooler, turbo timer and man in dandism mats :-)

It's in pretty good shape, clean engine bay and sills, no real rust to worry about, lovely interior and my favourite colour - steel mist grey.
I took it to Pacific works the other day for a health check, will be taking it back there soon for a cambelt and a few other minor bits.

I don't have many pics as yet and I can't post URLs yet but today I tried on my Enkei RP01 wheels and I think they look pretty good. I need some smaller tyres and some wheel nuts. Toyota, your nuts are strange, lol.

My plans are to get the essential cambelt and service work done asap, fit the Enkeis and just enjoy it. It will inevitably get faster at some point in the future but I'm happy with the power as it is at the moment.

The only problem with the car is the paint on the light covers, wings and doors. It looks like it has reacted to some overspray and someone's attempts to polish it out has made it worse. I will address this in the future but it's not a major problem for me.

I have noticed that the dipstick pops out every time I drive it. I'd be interested to know peoples thought on this.

Cheers!

You obviously have good taste in wheels :oldtongue: Cheers

Dundee eh? My mate is at uni up there, I'll trying to decide whether to drive up or use public transport. It's down to cost unfortunately.

i used 70 quid in fuel from clacton on sea to dundee in my rev2 turbo! best bet is to fly to edinburgh then get a bus to Dundee :thumleft: :thumleft:

providing flights are cheap enough :)

That's actually better than I expected TBH. I'd be driving from Northampton so less distance. Hmm, maybe I'll drive. I really want to show my mate how much better the MR2 is than his S13. (My old car lol).

having had an s13 and driven a s14a, i can tell you, the mr2 is miles better!! :thumleft: :thumleft:

if it's standard, he'll be eating your dust :) also, no LSD on the (standard) s13's, getting them off the line is a nightmare!

Thanks!

Rear 17x9 et 38 245/45
Front 17x8 et 35 225/45 EDIT: ACTUALLY ET 38

The fronts don't fit with that tyre - it fouls on the spring seat. I've been advised on 215/40/17. If you could still get 225/40/17s I would go for that.

I havent been able to find that size for years. Blackcircles, etyres, mytyres and camskill don't do them anyway.

I love the wheels, I think they look good on anything but especialy suit the MR2 :)

My previous car, the Skyline is being trailered off tomorrow so I removed my wheels and gave them a clean up. Can't wait to get them on the MR2.
I'm looking at these nuts:

I'm not sure if they will look a bit daft or be subtle enough to just look cool on closer inspection. It will be 2 weeks or so before I get the new tyres anyway so I might change my mind.

I ordered a fuel filter as the one on the car looks like the original item ](*,) and some silicone vac tubing to replace the perishing stock rubber stuff.

Tomorrow hopefully I'll get around my immobiliser issues. I'll fit these bits and the stock BOV I have to replace the massively leaking HKS one. I'm looking forward to driving it again, the BOV leak was certainly enough to sap some power and it was like it since I bought the car.

They look like the ones from driftworks. I've just ordered a set but in black, the neo chrome ones was too bling for me. :o

Indeed they are. I might get the more subtle black ones, it will depend on my mood come payday, lol.

After having the stock BOV on for a while now I can say it's MUCH better than the HKS one. Sounds pretty lairy too venting to atmosphere if that's your thing

I changed the fuel filter and alternator belt the other day, the fuel filter was easy but the alternator belt was a pain to get off with the massive intercooler in the way. I couldn't work out how the A/C idler bracket moved even after I took all the bolts out, ended up hitting it hard with a bar and a hammer - it worked but I'm still a bit puzzled. I left the belt off as I don't need A/C in this weather - I'll get it put back on when I have the timing belt done.
I also fitted the 3mm silicon tubing. I realised afterwards it was completely unnessecary but the green looks cool I guess...

If money allows I'll get my wheels on around xmas, I have to soon as my rear tyres are on their last legs. I've decided that 17s are probably going to be too big, especialy with my 45 profile tyres on the back but I'm gonna do it anyway to prove it to myself. At least it will look awesome 8)
