Are turbo timers worth the money or should I just let the engine idle for a while?

Turbo Timer

Do you have to wait around until the turbo timer turns off the engine before you activate your car alarm?

i have some crappy random branded one, but it works! lol
As to your alarm they will all interfere with your alarm, some new alarms have a built in turbo timer, you can put in a timer relay in to have the alarm activate, these are mainly availiable on the USA Ebay

Have a chat with Dan at DCDezign. I bought one of his LEA 826 alarms a while back which has every kind of function you could wish for and more. ie, remote start, turbo timer, pager alarm etc.

Cost is around £350 I believe which is fantastic for the spec of the thing

It was at least a year before I put my T-timer in....used to just sit fr a bit and then get out. Now I have a Blitz Fatt......9 times out of 10 I have it set to 50 secs, got another higher setting to use if need be. When I arm my alarm the car shuts off regardless of weather or not the t-timer has finished the 50 sec countdown. IF I start the car with the remote start and chance my mind and turn OFF the remote start it will countdown the 50 sec t-timer but the car is alarmed the whole time too.

Cheers

My daily driver is a Honda Accord, so naturally an N/A engine. I still can't get out of the habit of idling the car for a couple of minutes after a drive...even though I don't need to!

Bet my neighbours think I'm nuts, but old habits die hard!

Heh heh - I sit in the car as well letting the engine idle, but but decide myself when to turn the engine off ;)

Surely its a total no brainer?

Letting the car idle is all the turbo timer does.

The best way to do it is simply to drive 'off' boost for the last couple of miles before you park up.

got it in one  After a minute of idling the car starts to heat soak anyway so you are better off just driving off boost for the last bit of the journey. SHould be easy enough since no one lives in the pit garage of silverstone

My Cobra alarm won't arm the security whilst my Greddy turbo timer is running, which seems to make it a bit pointless.

I therefore just keep the engine running whilst I fit a steering wheel lock - which takes me about 2 minutes to do! So I've got extra security and cool down period built into one!

even if you could lock the car, it is an offence to leave a car with the engine running

not really because the Blitz has a control box which calculates the time required to time off the engine.

I'd rather trust Blitz over my own engine judgement

and of course because it has blitz on the casing that means it's perfect??? I've got a timer on my clifford all built in so I can alarm the car and walk away. The engine is still running but the doors are locked and when the timer stops the alarm system comes on straight away.

I don't use it cause the last 10 minutes of my journey is through town and off boost - bit like the motorway journey before it actually

Would you honestly? I would trust my own judgement every time over whatever Blitz says. Like i said much better to simply drive it off boost for the last few miles as that way at least you will get some airflow, rather than letting the car idle for however many minutes where it is going to heatsoak and then have to sort that out before turning it off.

Turbo timers= you've been ripped off/total waste of money IMO

The auto function on turbo timers is not to be trusted in any case, regardless of brand! They simply decide how long your engine idles via rpm. For example, anything over 1500 rpm and the timer starts adding seconds. This happens whether you bring the car on boost or not.

So at best you could say the auto function was a fail safe. It's not an accurate measure of time thats needed to allow cooling :)

So to sum up. If you don't trust yourself to either take things easy in that last mile before stopping, or can not be bothered to sit in your car to allow things to cool, then a T-timer is for you
