new mr2 owner couple of questions

Post by budd »

Hi all
This is my first proper post on the forum, so here goes….
Just bought a ’92 UK MR2 but it looks I’ve cocked up and bought the wrong car, basically I mentioned to a friend in the motortrade that I was after an MR2 as a base for race car project (MR2 challenge) to replace my Subaru Cup Impreza anyway my mate rings me and says he know of an MR2 that's been stood for a yr in a barn.
I think this sounds exactly what I need, it appears to be in good condition, starts and drives fine so I buy it, problem is it's a REV 2 not the REV 3 I need as a base for my race car #-o .
When I realise my mistake I think well I'll just break it and recover the purchase price but on inspection I find it's really to nice a car to break
I was pleasently surprised by how good it is structurally, I know MR2s do / can have a few issues with rust particularly the sills, this car as had it’s sills welded at some point and then GRP oversills (side skirts ) fitted and painted, the repair job is a good one as it’s possible to safely jack the car on it’s sill jacking points ( something that often results in a hole and a pile of rust on some cars), I’m not sure what make the side skirts are but they are reasonably well fitted, I know ‘body kits’ can be an acquired taste but these aren’t over the top and seem to suit the car.
The car also as 16” BK alloys 205 fronts 225 rears, the interior is blue cloth and is very good for it’s age no rips in the seats etc there are a few minor signs of wear and tear but for a car of this age (20 yrs) it’s remarkably good, also the car as the premium sounds system with multiple speakers and amps there is a Sony head unit and 10 disc changer with the correct adapter kit to connect it to the OE system although all this is in a box and I need to work out how it all works.
So all in all it’s quite a nice thing which I why I’ve decided to tidy it, MOT it and run it awhile until I source a rough / MOT fail REV 3 for my MR2 challenge car, first issue is to get it MOT’d, so a couple of quick questions, firstly the handbrake is still sticking after the above fettling I’ve freed it off the best I can without completely stripping the calliper, cable seems fine so I’m convinced it’s the handbrake lever on the calliper that’s sticking / not releasing and going back to the stop as it should, am I wasting my time messing with it and should I look for a good used or re con calliper or is it possible to strip it, free it and reassemble ?
The other issue is the wiper blades which need replacing, my question here after checking ebay is re the fittings mine appear to be attached by 2 small screws rather than the normal hook fitting are these wipers unique to Toyota ?
I’m hoping that’s all it will take to get it through it’s test as everything else seems to be working fine, which is very good on a 20 yr old car that’s been stood a while.

Hi, i can't advise on breaks as I haven't really done anything with mine before but the wipers should just push, pull of. The wiper arm has a hook on the end which they slide into and a funny angle. No need to touch the screws iirc. I'm sure some one will be around to give some advice on the breaks :thumleft:

Rev1&2 cars used two screws for wiper blade fitment. Rev3+ standard Bosch hook.

Don't bother stripping rear caliper. Find either a reconditioned or good s/h one. Also check cables move freely.

The lever has a strong return spring on it and pivots on roller bearings, I think it's more likely to be the piston(s) that'll be sticking rather than the lever.

thanks for the input, I thought the wiper fittings looked different TBH I only glanced at them to checkcondition (knackered !!!) and noticed the screws, so I'm looking for wipers with Toyota screw fiitings :thumleft: , at least that's stopped me odering the wrong items, re the brakes if it's likely to be a sticking piston then I've nothing to lose by removing it and checking for rust/damage and cleaning / replacing the the piston and dust seal and reassembling but is it possible / likely the roller bearing on the arm is causing the problem I've worked it back and forth in the vice but it doesn't seem to return to it's stop BTW hand brake cable is fine I checked it all when I loosened it off trying to reset the rear calipers, hopefully I'll have time to look at it later today

Sticky piston or gunged up/rusted hand brake lever. Not too difficult to successfully rebuild rear calipers (Biggred does kits) if you are confident. Special tool is about £6 from Toyota. Links to online BGB pages:

http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/jlawson2/MK3 ... sembly.pdf

Edit: even better: http://www.mr2roc.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=47&t=33557

Don't worry if the links are for MK 1,2, or 3 they are the same principle. From my experience don't try and undo the bolt under the spring on the handbrake lever or remove the stop pin as there is no need.

silly me it appears the 'SST' is a term for various different special tools these having different part numbers, but looking at the dis-assembly pics it would seem that the 'special ' tools are that special and I should be able to get away with what I already available eg SST 09719–14020 is just a piston rewind tool SST 09756–00010 is only 14mm deep socket SST 09612–22011 is a big drift all of which I have in my workshop if the rain holds off I'll whip the calipers off and have a go I'll take some pics and post them up when I've gained enough posts

just been moving the car into a position infront of the garage ready to put it on stands and get the calipers off and low and behold the handbrake seems to be working, previously it was only working if you pulled the lever right up (I've slackened the cable off) and once on wasn't releaseing now it seems to be holding the carand releasing, result !!! hopefully I may get away with agjusting the cable to lessen the lever travel, that will have to wait as it's tipping down here so it's time for a cuppa

got the caliper off, the cable is nice and free and the h/b lever on the caliper is also now moving freely but the piston is not moving when the h/b lever is moved so I've stripped it down, the piston came out reasonably easy using my girling rewind tool, seal is in good order but the dust boot is totally US so I'll need to order a rebuild kit, and I now understand the need far the special tool to get the h/b bits out I can compress it using a 12mm deep socket and a g clamp but then I can't get the circlip pliers in cos the clamp is in the way so I'll have to order the part from Toyota only a fiver and I can't see a way of getting it out without risk of damage so I guess I'll have to see if Toyota carry the tool in stock if not I'll be waiting for it to be delivered
