Custom wiring, anyone who knows about wiring, making looms etc??

Post by RyanRs »

I am going to relocate the ECU to the inside firewall behind the passenger seat so it is protected from the elements as my boot is now very much a part of te engine bay!
I have already tucked the body to engine harness, re-locating the fusebox in the boot N/S corner, and highly modified the engine harness so everything meets in the boot. However, this has left quite a mess of loom right where it all links up to the ecu.

What i want to do is cut the ecu wires before the multi-connectors and wire them in to a tidier form of cabling. I was thinking along the lines of using a couple connectors like the old DB25 serial port connectors, so i can run this protected 'Tidy' wiring back through the inner arch and into the cabin.

However, what i dont know is the amount of current thats likely to be passing through the wires in and out of the ECU and therefore i will not know if the DB25 cable wiring is thick enough to handle job?

What i would like to know is if anyone could suggest a more suitable connector and wire to do the job? I want something thats compact and tidy. The idea is i will solder all the ECU wires into the female end of one of these compact connectors, then use such wire as the DB25 to bridge the gap to the cabin, then wire the ECU multi plug into the DB25 connector at the cabin end.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for the help

Current's unrelated to voltage. The ECU is fused at 15A and you won't get that over the kind of wiring that's inside a serial cable!!

From memory the injector wires are larger too.

Ryan, I would look at proper automotive connectors that are a standard in motorsport. Motec ECUs etc use these kind of connectors and you can buy kits for them from eBay and motorsport suppliers.

Be prepared to bend over though - the good quality stuff is very expensive. The crimping tool alone for the MilCons that we've used on race cars is over £500!
