Mark 2 Import Insurance?

Post by Ridge Racer »

Hello all

Are imported cars more expensive to insure than UK models?

Also are T bars more expensive to insure than tin tops/sun roofs models?

Thanks

Depends on the insurer, some will try to blag that imports are magically different to equivalent UK cars.

I don't think there's any difference between T-tops and moonroof equiped Mk2s

I found insurance for my UK N/A for £630 fully comp. I checked for an imported N/A and it was around £100 more.

Totally depends on insurers. If you have an import, do not rely on the registration number.

Speak to a specialist insurers, see IMOC affiliate section for two insurance traders :thumleft:

A lot of insurance companies will not even insure an Import. From what i gather Imports usually work out more expensive to insure :(

More so with insurers who predominantly deal with standard UK car insurance.

Please do not fall into the trap of insuring the car as a UK car just using the registration number... a lot of people wrongly assume the registration number picks up the correct model, it actually rarely does.

Thanks for all the feedback guys, very helpful!

I've found a MR2, black, T top for what seems to be a cheap £650, its mint, it was imported in 2004 and has only done 64,000 miles

Might have to go have a look

So i guess it is more expensive for an import generally then :(

Why do we have soooo many imports?! 3 out of 5 cars i see on eBay are imported ones

If it is a non-turbo model, we would rate this the same as a UK model :)

Frankly if the car above is in good nick with a genuine 64K miles, at that price you should bite his hand off. Several years of increased premiums and it would still work out cheaper! (Cars with that mileage are usually £2K+).

I pay £230 for my Rev 2 turbo on a classic policy. Should be sub 200 hundred easily for a NA.

30 - driving the MR2 as a second car so no NCB etc. 1 accident in past 5 years (don't ask ).

For a turbo I expect it'd be still be fairly high due to your age but a N/A should be quite reasonable. Certainly no harm in trying a quote with someone like Peter Best along the other places mentioned. :)

What if the DVLA registered the car in the UK as a GT TBAR when it's a GT TURBO TBAR?

Not my fault, it's how i brought it and it is a GT TBAR, the word turbo doesn't appear on every turbo logbook i'm sure.

Had an Audi A3 1.9 TDI which just read Audi 1.9 Diesel.

Ignorance is bliss

It is the car owner's responsibility to reveal all material facts to the insurance company. What the V5 says is irrelevant. Been proven in court so many times.

Point is.

I purchased the car as a GT TBAR

DVLA had it registered as a GT TBAR on the import papers.

It's been in the UK since 2007 as a GT TBAR.

As a car buyer, how am i to know the car should be registered with an engine component description attached when so many standard UK cars don't?
