Alarm fob info

Post by Seanie »

Hi all
I have the built in Toyota security system with the two fob button.

I am going to change the battery but was told that If you don't change it within a few seconds it will stop working with the car.
Does anyone now what battery is it?

Also when I stand near the car the fob does not work unless I'm puttin it near the interior light.
Sometime it works to unlock but using the lock button from the same place does not work.

Is there any options on the security system like hold down key gives a different option or is it just basic open and close

Has anyone got the original user manual for the alarm?

Cheers all

It's a CR2025.

You could have opened it up to check and put it back together before popping to the shops

As for it sometimes not working - yes, they all tend to go like that eventually.

I'm guessing you have a rev4 or rev5 ?

As for options (at least on the rev4/rev5):
First press of lock button (short indicator flash) arms the interior & doors.
Seconds press of the lock button (long indicator flash) arms only the doors.

Also, to resync the fob, hold down both buttons for 2 seconds when near the car. But I don't think this is your problem.

I thought I read that if you remove the battery for more than ten seconds it will loose connection to the car. I have a rev 5, you say they all do this is it perminant or will a battery change fix it?

Cheers for the reply

No.

It is possible though, but involves removing the centre dash and getting at the remote locking ecu. Again, assuming you have a UK rev4/rev5 ?

*edit, missed your post that says you have a rev5 :)

A new battery may help improve things, and is certainly the easiest thing to try.
But it's not usually the fob that's at fault for the short range when locking/unlocking. It's normally the ecu receiver.

The only improvement is to replace it #-o

The guide bennn linked to above shows it :)

Wish I'd known about that guide earlier

It's relatively simple to replace as it's just plugged into the cars wiring.

Getting hold of a replacement isn't so easy.
From memory, Toyota want £120 for a new one and may not actually be available any more.
And a 2nd hand one may have the same problem as they all tend to get worse over the years.

Do I need to replace the entire ecu or can a new received be added / extended?

The TVSS-IIIB ecu has the receiver built into it, so you'd need to replace the whole ecu.

Just depends how cheaply you can source a replacement ecu to whether you think it's worth it.
As it's a common problem (and they're not fantastic when brand new either), getting a 2nd hand one that's 'better' is a bit of a gamble.

Mine had got to the point where it wouldn't work at all.
Luckily, my replacement works like new, so I can now lock/unlock the car from 10 feet away :D

I've really no idea why they degrade over time.

Just a thought, you have tried both fobs?
Just in case in the unlikely event it's the actual fob.

And there's a couple of ecu's on fleabay...

One from a Lexus for £22
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LEXUS-GS300-1 ... 4ab8517da1

One from a Rav4 for £120 (been on there for a while, I saw that months ago)
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TOYOTA-RAV-4- ... 1e67931a18

The one for £22 may be worth a punt.
Just follow the guide bennn linked to above and download the pdf for instructions to delete any old fobs it has in it's memory (as the ecu only works with a limited number of fobs) (and of course you wouldn't want the seller coming round to your house with his old fob  ).
