[Mk2] [Turbo] Power steering issue...

Post by Raptor »

My rev1's power steering is basically doing my nut in.

Since I bought it it has worked on the odd day, but most days I have nothing. I did the simple fix of joining the two top terminals above the relay together to cut it out and it worked...for a bit

now everytime i start the car i get a hissing from the front, as if a hydraulic pump is trying to work. could the pump have gone as the fluid is up and everything else seems ok...

if its not that, any idea what else it could be?

cheers

I am no expert but shooting out the relay would mean your power steering wouldn't turn off at 40kph. Which could be a bit iffy at high speed.

Are the wires still shorted out? A poor connection might not be enough to drive the pump. If the relay is faulty there is the old turn the ignition on and off loads of time trick which helps clean the contacts on the relay.

Sorry I can't be of much help I just thought it might be worth mentioning.

Incorrect. The ignition controlled main relay supplies a positive feed to the pump all the while the ignition is switched on. The earth is supplied by the PAS system according to instructions from the ECU.

That makes sense, not sure if I heard that or just assumed it. I think I should stick to what I know .
Aggh is that why speed converters connected to the ecu bu88er up pas to mph instead of kph?
Cheers Peter.

the reason i shorted it as it's another fix, along with the ignition trick. well from what i have read it is. it seems like it could be the pump or ecu so may just replace them and cros my fingers!

Better to get problem diagnosed and fixed by a specialist rather than replace everything in sight.

Wherabouts are you based?
