Apexi AVCR - Fitting advice

Post by Rory »

Im thinking about getting an Apexi AVCR but need to know how hard is it to install then setup and does it come with all instructions? Ive searched the forum but not really found much detail.

1) - How much work is involved installing it into the engine bay? (Ive fitted my G Valve fine)

2) - Is it really as hard to setup as people say or is just a case of trial and error. Does it come with instructions to setup boost in gears etc etc

3) - Where is the best/cheapest place to buy one?

4) - Can someone post a photo of the unit mounted inside the ash tray slot?

Thanks

I've heard it said that the AVCR wiring needs extending as its really aimed at front engined cars and the harness won't reach into the MR2 engine bay if the device is mounted on/near the dash (which is where you'd expect to mount it!).

Awfully purdy, especially in the new all-black colour scheme.....

yeah Rory you'll have no problems chappy.

1) Similar to your valve. But it'll be a solenoid, which has wiring which need to be run into the cabin, and also a pressure sensor need fitting. This goes over by the diag port and also has wires running to the cabin.

2) It's a littel OTT IMHO. For what it does youcan have a different ebc plumbed in and boosting in 1/8 of the time. Instruction all included.

3) No clue.

4) errrrr, I did Jez's from the MR2oc. Looks sawweeeet!

I've got a greddy profec B2 and it's cool. Excellent boost control, simple, straight forward installation and setup. All done in an hour.

Hi,

My car is with Rogue at the mo and I had a look at some of their other cars they are working on and lo and behold they have a car with an AVCR fitted exactly where the ashtray fits!

I am sure tho that the owner (or whoever) had to remove the the slot where the ashtray slots into and fitted the avcr there.

The avcr has its wiring on the right hand side and mounted it with some foam padding behind the avcr to bulk it out and allow it to "fit" flush with the dash.

The only thing is, you have to manually swivel the unit upwards to se the display as the daylight reflects on the avcr unit and you cant see a damn thing! BUT it looks IMO to be the best place to mount it! Mounting it on the steering cowling is a bit too blingy!

I have No piccies tho! I should be picking my car up on Tuesday and so should be able to get a piccie taken then....

From what i saw on the other car, you need to dress the sides up a bit as you can see gaps around the unit and can see all the dust etc under the trim around where the ashtray goes  Maybe use some dense black foam or plastic...anyone blue peter skilled??

'skywalker', got any pics of jezes car??

HTH!

Julian

But a bit of thought and it looks cool

1. About a day's worth if you are DIY and taking your time. You need to take some interior trim out, and extend the wiring loom through to the engine bay and the boot with the ECU.

2. Search for AVC-R settings. They *are* difficult to setup and get right (took me about 6 months to fine tune mine) but there are plenty of people here who can share their settings with you.

As requested.

There's a bit of reflection without the t-bar shades in, but i very rarely have them out, just haven't got round to putting them or the rest of the interior back in since totb yet.

Julian, here's a pic of Jezs' car. But only the engine, I can't find my other pics.

There is an avcr in there, solenoid and pressure sensor. find it if you can! lol

My S-AFC2 is in the same position as tim's, very good spot for it I reckon. Ashtray has too many gaps around it IMO.

Continuing this topic, I am fitting my AVCR and everything is in place ready to splice into the ECU wiring. To me this is the most nerve racking part. Any tips on how to do this? In the boot by the ECU, there does not look as if there is any slack in the loom in order to give more manouvrability for joining the wires. How do I go about exposing part of the wire in order to join and solder the cables together? Any help much appreciated. Thanks.

If you get some decent wire stippers you should be able to strip the wire insulation back without actully cutting the wire.......once done tin the exposed wire and off you go......
