[Mk2] [Generic] window went up but won't come back down...

Wound the window up some time ago...and it won't come back down again, it happened after a particularly wet night although I can't see any signs of water damage or ingress.
There is continuity between all the relevant wires on the passenger window switch - window motor and switch - plug in the footwell, I ve also tried it with another motor and the same happens...went up but won't come back down, disconnecting the drivers side switches seems to disable all action but the window lock switch doesn't work on either side....I don't really know what else to try...help please guys, it's too hot all of a sudden.

have you had a look at the window regulator?
it tends to snap on one of the corners and that prevents the window from working as it should

not sure what that is...but if I reverse the wires it comes back down again so it must be the switch I reckon.
