Wheel hub problem...

Post by xtremepix »

Hey guys,

I removed my nearside rear wheel to inspect an unusual sound coming from the wheel or break. Sounded like a ticking sound, and only occured when the car was warm, and would occur more often when turning to the right.

I removed the wheel and saw that a metal clip appeared to be rubbing on the brake disk, so I bent it back a bit. (see below for pic)

Image

When re-fitting the wheel, I was tightening the wheel nuts, and the studding snapped ! #-o

Im guessing I need to renew my wheel hub assembly? Does anyone know where I can get a replacement part, and exactly what I need? My car is a UK model rev 1 NA 1991. Is it a difficult job? Can I drive the car (limited use) with 4 wheel studs?

Thanks in advance!

I know you can buy the studs separately, but by the time you've paid someone to press a new one in it might be cheaper + easier to just pick up a 2nd hand hub/knuckle.

And I would say you are ok with limited use on 4 nuts. I had a nut left loose by a garage once and didn't notice for 500 odd miles! The only problem would be if the stud is very loose and falls back from the hub, catching on something. Can you get a wheel nut on it finger tight?

That's the pad wear indicator. When it rubs the disc, time to change pads.

Absolutely not!

Bang old stud bit with punch, pull new one through. Pulling through can be tricky, but PM me your details and i'll send you a used stud which will be easy to pull through.

Yeah sorry that was a pic to show the hub... right before it happened!! Thanks for the advice guys, that saves me a lot of hassle! Right, I'd better change my pads then! Anyone know the best place to pick up pads?

I have been thinking of upgrading to the rev3 brakes, depending on cost of new pads I might consider doing this now?

You will need new calipers new discs and new pads to upgrade. Are you still on Rev 1 wheels?

Well the rear pads are the exact same pads whether you upgrade or not...

for real lol, if you had to bend the metal squeal clip back, you must be basically not far off metal on metal.

I broke a hub bolt before, you have to turn the hub till the offending bolt is clear to come out of the back of the hub, I think its around 5 o'clock if i remember rightly. then i got a hammer and knocked it through.
pulling the new one through was a case of pushing in as far as possible from the back of the hub and then using one of the wheel nuts to pull it through by screwing the wheel nut on the bolt.

think the bolt has tiny ridges at the end which align with the hub bolt hole so you'll know when its in place before you use the wheel nut to pull it through

Changing up to the later larger brakes if your wheels allow is a very worthwhile mod if you can do it. Get full kit, f & r calipers, discs and pads in reasonable nick for £150-200 secondhand here I'd guess. Add braided lines and your sorted... Big difference.
