[Mk2] [Turbo] Rear Suspension Damage

Post by nick26275 »

I recently replaced my rear subframe and drivers side alloy wheel following spin and slide into a high curb. The main suspension arm hade made the bolt hole that secures to the subframe about half an inch long. The wheel was to badly buckled for repair.
Now the works been done and the cars been 4 wheel aligned at a local garage. They told me the camber was out on the rear (that had had the smack). It is at +0.5 and should be at -1.5 deg. They told me this cannot be adjusted. Do you think I might get that much from the hub knuckle bolts or do you thing the strut or strut cap (suspension support)may be damaged?

Whilst i cant answer your question, i believe the solution is to get some crash or camber adjusting bolts. they replace the top bolt of the two that connects the strut to the hub and are slightly eliptical. They will offer enough adjustment to sort your problem.

OK I have some eliptical camber bolts on order thanks. Will the toe on the rear need to be readjusted following their installation? I can't imagine it changng much. I was planning on attempting to measure the camber from the good side to the adjusted bad side with a spirit level, a block of wood tapped to the level at the diameter of the hub and a digital vernier to measure the distance to vertical? Moneys tight after Xmas trying to do things on the cheap!!

i dont see why it should, but ive always taken the policy that any suspension modification at all requires realignment, even something as trivial as loosening and retightening the subframe. Its up to you. If you drive it for 5000 miles, car feels fine and you get no uneven tyre wear would you care it was out of alignment? If it showed bad signs you can take it for an alignment then.

eh that doesn't fix the problem?

Surely, you must find what is causing the camber, rather than bodging around it?? A good hard look will surely tell all.
