NEW member / owner having a bad time

Post by mgregor »

Hi Guys,

I am a newbie to the MR2 world and recently purchased a 1996 REV 4 N/A, the car itself is very clean even though reading 99000 on the clock.
I love the feel and look of my new motor but have had a bad time reliability wise.

Bought the car for £600 with T&T, which at the time thought was too good to be true and after day 1 realised it was. starting issues from cold first morning and after ringing the bloke i got it off i found out he had fitted a switch under the dash to bypass the CTS.... not good!
changed the CTS sensor but still would not start from cold.
put up with it as i was just using it to get to work and back but averaging 23/Gallon was killing my wallet.

3 weeks later on my way home from work a strange noise?? next junction cut-out and struggled to start let alone idle, compression test showed 70/70/150/120, oh my what had i done?

head gasket blew through on the sealing ring from cyl 1 to 2... common?
have now spent 3 months stripping, saving, rebuilding and hope to be on the road again soon.

rebuild itself has not been too much ball ache but head was like a banana requiring 0.5mm off in order to get good clean-up :pale: will it run? only a turn of the key will tell.

So, needless to say my intro to the world of MR2's has been a rocky road but i will not give up.. even if it bankrupts me i will drive my pride and joy again...

once i have enough posts ill get some pics up but for now i'll just keep on believing that it will fire up when i've finished.

sorry to hear your mistfortunes. on the bright side - at least you only paid £600 for a rev 4! lol.
hope this rebuild sorts it out. i can not see why it won't be very reliable once sorted out. it just needed a little tlc...!

yeah i know, was told to try and avoid taking off more than 12 thou, i have skimmed 15 thou so dreading turning the key but thought as the rest of the lump has done 100k, compression wouldnt be at its upper limits anyway (i hope). Might need that head if s**t happens which it usualy does with me. How much would you be asking for it?got to try this 1 with al the money i have put into new hg, skim, lapping valves, new shims etc. Just fingers crossed i supose.

you guys are a friendly bunch. Im liking this forum already. Looked into buying a head from a car bein broken and got quoted £275 + vat. So just went ahead and skimmed it as i wasnt prepared to pay more than half of what the whole car cost. Lol. I did try and skim .3 but the fire face had not cleaned up at either end so needs must.

£275+VAT

Mate- you could get 2 REV4 na engines for that! Not surprised you went with the one you had... :eye:

I'll be keen to see what results a pressure test gives once you start up, you might even get a bit of extra power with such an aggressive skim

would be nice! :D more likely to blow the rings off the pistons though i think, well compression has to be better than 70-70-150-120. some of my farts have more compression than cyl's 1 and 2 had
