T piece needed to add oil pressure sender

Post by Andrew Edwards »

I have an electric oil pressure gauge in my car that has been sat doing nothing for months as i am lazy. I have now decided it is time to fit the sender but i need a T piece type thing as there isn't enough space in the stock location.
My mate has just bought an Mr2 and has this T piece on it which enables him to have the aftermarket and the stock oil pressure sender. Anyone know where i can get my hands on one of these?
Oh, and will the oil need to be drained to do this?

I got mine at thinkauto.com
No need to drain oil as the gallery should only be full when the engine is running.

One thing to watch out for: screwing a bulky sender/t-piece directly into the same hole used by the original oil pressure switch can be a bad idea. I have heard of the head cracking or even snapping under the additional weight and vibration.
I mounted my new sender remotely by buying a male-male adapter to fit into the original oil switch hole and a length of braided hose with female fittings on each end. That way you can mount the t-piece at a suitable position in the engine bay and use the hose to connect it to the oil gallery/head.

That sounds like a good idea. Is there a maximum hose length? ie-does it become less accurate the longer the hose?
Oh, and something i should have really asked before, what size screw bit will i need to fit the stock hole?

Oh, and do you think halfords will stock the relevant bits and bobs? Thanks a lot

If i remember rightly the thread in the block is 1/8 BSPT and i used a 1/8bsp to 1/8npt adapter for the block. Thant way i could use a 12" length of hose with 1/8npt fittings on each end. Halfords dont do this.
The original pressure switch, new oil pressure sender for the gauge and braided hose will screw into the thinkauto t-piece
