Mk 2 easy to buy/sell on? HUGE price variation. Who prefers NA?

Post by freak_in_cage »

Hi guys

I have a friend who wants a mk 2. I owned a mk3 a few yrs back which I loved but he wants a mk 2 as he prefers the look and the decent boot.

He intends to get a NA, only as it will be better on fuel, and perhaps a little cheaper to run.

Will be used for daily driving, but maybe the odd track day too :) in light of this, he would be happy with a couple of v light mods to suit this- mainly just brake tweaks and decent tyres.

Mk 2 NA prices seem to vary wildly, you can spend £500-£2000. I know it makes sense to buy more, as you end up paying later for a lot of other work. However, with turbos starting at £1500, it must be tough to sell a NA for more than this?? If he spends 2k now, is he likely to recoup this when he sells???

The bottom has dropped out of the MR2's

A mate of mine picked up a nice REV3 N/A the other day for £500 and the only work it needs if being picky is new pads and discs which is around £150

You could probably spend £2K on a nice rev5 with decent mileage on, but anything older I wouldn't want to spend a lot on.

I spent over £2.5K buying my Rev 5 n/a. It's a lovely motor though and doesn't need any money spending on it....just get in and drive.
That said, I chose to buy a new door rubber trim surround at £75 from Toyota as the one on the car had holes in it.
I've done an oil + filter change which cost just over £30 and bought some clear side repeaters and repainted the alloys myself all in for £70.

I reckon I have spent over the odds a little....but no more than £150-200 tops.....but I know my car has never been ragged at all and has been well looked after. So I bought extra peace of mind really.

My car only has 73k miles with 1 previous owner in Cosmos Blue.
I'm happy to pay a bit extra for the right car.
I'm leaving it standard so won't lose money on modifications either.

Look at Dale's Orange rev 5. He wants around £2500 for it and that's got 150k miles on it. Still a lovely car to look at etc so it depends what you want.

You also have to take in the longer term scenario.
Buy cheap and you could end up spending long term.
You might get lucky though.
