[Mk2] [Generic] What size wheel spacers do i need?

Post by Tomm »

hoping someone can help me out here.

i was running ET30 18x8 Meister S2's with no dramas at all. I wanted to get some wider rear wheels but couldn't find any S2's so changed wheels completely.

I now have some rears which fit more how i wanted.

I have ET38 9.5+ 25mm rears and ET38 8.5 fronts.

My problem is on the front the wheel fouls on my coilovers.

Can anyone tell me what size spacer i will need to run on the front to get the wheel off of the strut?

With the wheels being 8.5 i dont really want that much of a poke at the front. I figure they are going to poke at the front which i dont have any problem with, I just dont want the front to be giving the rear a run for their money.

I have no issue with a stretch and arch roll.

Could anyone tell me what the smallest spacer i can run on the front of my ET38/8.5 to clear my JIC coilovers will be great!

Thanks

You might get away with a 5mm spacer but tbh...it's debatable whether the studs will be long enough, There was a pair of customm 3mm spacers on here a while ago but it was finalized...I looked...I have the same wheel setup as you and couldn't run any spacers at all without fitting extended studs all round.

I have 4mm spacers on the front of mine and I just kept the standard studs and they seem to fit fine!

5mm is fine with standard studs.

On stock suspension I know a 8.5" ET27 clears the front strut comfortably (enough for a 255 width tyre, lol). It might not be the case with coilovers as you often need 5 to 10mm more clearance compared to stock struts on the front as the coilover is usually thicker/occupies more space (varies with brand of coilovers which is why it's unlikely anyone will have tried your specific combo)

I'd try a 10mm first followed by a 15mm and just work your way up in 5mm increments until it fits. My gut feeling is you'll likely need a 15mm spacer to give you comfortable clearance - especially if you are wanting a decent width tyre up front as well :thumleft:

I wasn't a huge fan of the way my 8.5" ET27 fit up front as I felt it poked beyond the arch just a little too much even with a fair amount of negative camber but everybody has different tastes

maybe pack the studs out with washers to get clearance and from there you know your required spacer size?

I couldn't fit 5mm spacers with standard studs. You need at least the width of the stud of usable thread showing.
Careful of the studs on the bay, most are good but need your hubs drilling as they are larger diameter on the splines. (You can do it with a decent hand drill.)
I managed 5mm spacers on the rear on standard studs but only just!
Depends on your wheels i suppose.
