[Mk2] [Turbo] New Day-New Problems! :(

Post by veilside_mr2 »

Hi,

Once again, I fix one thing and something else goes wrong. Hope someone can help.

Problem number 1:- Lack of Boost

I have recently removed the actuator to fix another problem, I had a nightmare trying to refit it and to get the circlip attached. Finally managed it, but now the car is only boosting to 7psi. Im assuming ive adjusted the actuator arm when refitting it. But I dont want to attempt removing it and adjusting it back.

Would fitting an aftermarket manual boost controller sort this out?

Problem Number 2:- Slight Misfite/Stutter under acceleration

I have recently removed my downpipe and o2 sensor recently to solve another problem. When I did this I managed to snap the cable off the o2 sensor. I have bodged it back together with an electrical connector but maybe it hasnt worked hence the stutter? Also, I noticed a rattle noise when I shuck the o2 sensor, so maybe I broke something inside it also?

Would a dodgy o2 sensor make a slight stutter/misfire?

Problem number 3:- Steering wheel shake

I have recently replaced the inner and outer track rod ends and had the car tracking all done. But the steering is shaking at about 70mph. The strange thing was it didnt shake at all before I changed the track rod ends. So it shouldnt be wheel balancing?

Any ideas what to check next? Its mega annoying.

Erm, thats about it for now. I love MR2`s, they are so reliable lol.

LambdA...if its rattling...it's broken. When I was looking for one, the popular opinion was to go with OEM...you can get a generic for about £40 but there were tales of them not lasting very long....unplug it and if the symptoms don't go away or change then replace it...tbh mate, rev1/2 lambda's are almost throw away for the people who have converted to rev 3 setup...check out some garrages and send out a few PM's...try gazrev1tubby, he has been getting rid of loads of his old engine build bits.

Booost...lack of...check over all the vac lines.
turbo - actuator...actuator - tvsv...tvsv - plenum. Have you unplugged the tvsv.
A boost leak in the vac line or in the pipework from AFM to TB will cause fuelling issues as will airlocks in the coolant system.
Really man, you just gotta suck it up and take the turbo and/or actuator off and inspect it for damage...if you've altered the throw of the rod, you may still be able to see where it used to be set at.

Wheel wobble...Could be a number of things...warped discs ( but normally evedent under braking), bent wheel, no spiggot rings...or 1 fell out when they had wheel off and didn't get replaced, take it for an alignment check.
This was my car after a year on the Essex farm tracks...and I had left hand wheel wobble...hit some hooj potholes last year!

...after 30 mins on the ramps with a very good mechanic...

All sweet as...just had to match the camber on the rear a bit better..

....also, really easy to crack T-pieces...I had one that evaded discovery for days...it was giving it the "soapy water spray" that gave its location up :thumleft: all the way back from the Pod last year, it felt like the BOV was leaking pressure out at boost...split t-piece...while your on it...have a good look at your hose/couplings and clips. These have gotta be 100% sealed on the AFM cars...I had an issue with old silicone hose joints "de-laminating" from the inside out...when under boost, they ballooned and leaked measured, and crucially "fuelled", air...although this isn't really an issue for you currently...disturbing the intake system may cause other issues to arrise confusing things.

Don't try and cure this by upping the boost with a manual boost controller, sounds like a bad idea to me...and may cause premature engine melt.

boost problem solved, it was a broken jubilee clip on the intercooler pipework lol. Nice and simple fix. Phew.
