How to get to the door lock barrel?

Post by Racer7 »

Hi,

I was reading some posts about getting a replacement key from Mr T by way of the code off of the drivers side lock barrel.

I attempted this today but only got as far as removing the door trim (which for my incompetent self was pretty good).

Could someone please give me some pointers as to how I get to taking the door lock out?

I can't see any easy access points to do this though i can see three bolts which understand release the whole handle. (2 on the right one on the left) The left side looks very difficult to get to thanks to the window.

If there is a guide that would be wicked as pictures paint a thousand words for me!

Window out is how I did it. If you've got lots of bendy tools and really small hands I would imagine you can do it without, I've never managed it though.

Would it not be easier to remove the ignition barrel?

do the window up, take out the rubber bung in the door and use a 10mm socket on an extension bar (through the hole where the little rubber bung was) undo the 2x 10mm bolts that are together, take off the lock rod that goes to to catch, you will need to bend the metal tab a little to free the lock then it will pop out, refit in reverse

was typing the same time as toxo, seriously though all you need is a 10mm socket and extension and a large flat bade screwdrive to bend the tab away a little, no need to remove the window

Cheers guys,

indeed it does seem like you need children's hands! I did look at it with the window up it seemed that the metal arms that raise the window was getting in the way.

Toxo, I was under the impression that the key code is only on the driver side barrel. Is that incorrect?

I'll have to steal some tools (not literally) off my mate and attempt tomorrow)

Hopefully once I look at the car jasongtrs guidance will all make sense!

i sold a full lockset from a car thats still on my driveway with complete doors still on it. only removed the doorcards on it, i dont remember the window reg being in the way, the rachet will not be going in the door at all, thats why you take out the little rubber gromit/bung at the top right hand side of the drivers door (inline with the 10mm bolts)

Just wanted to say a big thanks to jasongtr.

The instructions above are bang on and it's actually not too bad (albeit a little fiddly. The one thing that went wrong but sort of worked out out was removing the barrel from the pulley arm. On mine the bolt snapped:

I think (touch wood) it's okay though as the 'keyed' metal below the screwhead fits into the metal bracket and then the central locking wiring clamps on top.

Defo wouldn't have been able to do it without a socket set with extension! (my next purchase!)

Oh, one more thing - if you just want the barrel code. I dont think you need to take it out (assuming code is the one that goes like A000A). You can just about make it out buy twisting the lock. A digital camera with flash will probably pick it out better. That's my learning from this anyway.

Just in the same situation.
The VIN key oredered to Toyota doesn't fit.
Sorry to say that I'm in trouble with the advice (not Native English speaker).
May someone try to rephrase for me?
My understanding:

1 remove the driver's (UK) doorcard
2 look for a gummy staff on the right upper end of the door
3 remove it
4 play with the 10
5 loosen a bit the lockset
6 make a pic with camera of the code

Please correct my to do list...

:D

PS:
also some hints on the door card removal please.
In the espace I broke three clips on five

Superb guide for removing the door panels here:

http://www.turbomr2.com/MR2/HowTo/Door% ... el_PG1.htm

Your list is fine. I'll see if I can find a pic I may have taken of the 'gummy' bit that you need to take out.

step 5 is the hardest in the sense that it could take you seconds to move the lock into view or maybe 10minutes.

If you can twist the lock enough using a camera with a flash may pick up the code imprint.

In my case I took the whole barrel out but also snapped a bit of the metal (though it doesn't matter, luckily). My advice about the camera with flash is to try and avoid the hassle of removing it completely.

Hope that helps. 8)

Step 5 was indeed a problem

The lock itself is Mickey Mouse shaped  with the two in the holes ears for the two 10 nuts.
On the nose there is a plastic contact fixed on two sides (now on one on mine  ).

There are 3 numbers jus belowt the ears and 5 alphanumbers on the nose almost facing down.
Those 5 ones are indeed the ones to use for the order.

The digital pics is indeed a good idea.
Now I got everything.

  In the hurry of assmbling everything I haven't tested the lock after the reposition.
Now the lock is not locking and the other lock is not commanding this lock.
](*,) ](*,)

Tomorrow I'll be back. As a matter of fact the the nuts were originally almost undone with some of the black putty around. My guess is that the previous owner played with it... #-o

I've lost my key and want to order a replacement, all the above looks a bit horrible to just get the barrel number, I don't suppose the number would be accessible using one of those fibre optic probe thingies?

Yeah, the door panel is an easy one.
Then point 5 is a little bit tricky.
Please take care that the plastic cap over the barrel (exactly on top of the screw in the pic) has two clip, one on each side.
I've broken one and now the power lock is not commanding the passenger door.

PS:
Mickey's ears are just below the margin of the pic.
The magic numbers are on the other face of the barrel
