There was a white one on a garage forecourt rusted up arches and a damaged front bumper down the road from my parents, it went for 1300 quid! Wasnt even a T-bar. Yours looks in much better condition. It will sell just hold out for a while someone will go for it, just needs the right buyer.

I guess any car older than 10 years or above a certain mileage will put a lot of people off, you get reg snobs, or people who worry it wont be reliable or last long term so you need the right person to come along. Taxed and mot and a t-bar ready for summer, reliable runner.. I`d have it off you if I didnt have my mk2! Would love a mk1 at some point.

It goes without saying that the car will only interest the enthusiast market. I may be wrong but there won't be many people using as their main car. If you want to get the Mk1 into a true classic it will have to move through into the enthusiast market. For what you will get for it park it in a dry garage wait probably only 5 years. Then try again. The scrapage scheme has taken a lot off the road. As someone has previoulsy said some people will by a rusted out one. "The Enthusiast"

They are a dieing ownership base i'm afraid, pretty soon it will only be the hardcore Mk1 enthusiasts left. The cost of restoring them far outweighs their value, so unless you have a good one they eventually find their way to the scrapyard.

I'll personally own one forever, i have a pristine condition T-bar that every single part has been renewed on that i'll never sell. It's such a shame Mk1's are in decline but inevitable i suppose.

this must happen with all older cars, going through several phases from "now I can at last afford one of those" to "why would you want that?" eventually only very good ones will survive due to cost to own over value for money

Its the rust and cost of repairing that puts your everyday buyer off. Its the same with Vauxhall Nova's, i'd have another if i could find a decent 1.5TD again but there are just none around anymore and the ones that are in good condition fetch very good money. If your mk1 is mint it'll only go up in value now. I'll never sell mine, its solid but the paint is faded but i know its 100% mechanically sound.

All the time I can afford mine I will keep it, even if it costs me more than its worth. Its already paid for itself in terms of use and to be honest doesn't cost that much to do stuff. Am now looking at the cost of preventative maintenance on it, that sort of thing.

As for selling, seen some go for some very low figures and others that we'd consider a dog to go for good money. At the end of the day they will only go up in value as less and less are available, the last time someone did a DVLA check I think there was only something like 6000 left taxed and tested on the road..

Just checked: 5284 left T&T as of 17 August 2009.

So becoming rarer.

To be honest I see more stuff like MG Midgets / MGBGTs etc than I do MK1s.

SC's must be in the low hundreds.

No, remember you are relying on DVLA info.. which is sketchy at the best of times.

Me too Paul, or at least I will certainly try. I have a spotless TinTop in a dry lock up which is the keeper.

Well I'd be interested but I have a garage of bits, with two on the drive already :( Got a mica blue one that I might be selling in the latter half of the year, yours is in better nick than mine so it doesn't bode well.

Give it another 10 years and I think people will really be searching after them. At some point I'll look to get a keeper for the long term.

By and large, people on here already have an MR2. Unless it's something special it's unlikely to sell in a hurry. Vix's white car was on here for ages before we decided to make a proper effort to sell it. It went via Autotrader within a few days.
