Afew Questions From Potential MR2 Owner

Post by Ridge Racer »

Hello all

some may remember me... i was on here about 2 years ago and i had 2 mr2 mark 1's (met blue and black ones)

I've since decided i might like a mr2 mk2 but i will be a new driver annnnd im only 24...

so first question is... will this car be really expensive for a first car? im not a fast driver and i understand the risks of rear wheel drive im pretty sensible to be honest I've just always loved the mr2

2nd question... how reliable are these things? i'v had a quick look around at posts and it seems they do tend to break alot? i guess it would always be worsed case scenario on a message board with people asking for help but my main concern is do these things rust like the mark 1?!

3rd.. which is the safer car? the rev1? rev 3? rev 5? i've seen people speak of over or under steer can't remember which on the rev 1's and i prefer the look of the later model with the shaped back lights...

4, is there any differance in insurance costs for a rev1 to a rev 3... etc?

cheers chaps thanks in advance for any advice

first car??
thought you said youv had 2 mk1s?????
pretty sure most mk1s these days go for more than what early mk2 NAs go for!

depends how much you want to spend of a mk2?? cheap money will get you a dog that needs doing up, expensive side will "hopefully" not and be in genenal better condition.

all give oversteer to a point, but rev2+ is less likely....(as stock)

remember nobody is going to post how their car doesnt break, people post things about there car breaking to gain advice on repair costs or the ease of a diy fix.

that said if you are worried about the costs of fixing one get an NA no matter how cheap a turbo is

I'm 24 and I don't find insurance a problem but I have been driving since I was 17, have a professional license and have had big powered cars since the age of 18. This is my car history.

17Yrs old (first car)
Ford escort 1.4 crashed a month later,
17Yrs old
Ford escort 1.6 zetec
Honda civic type R
18Yrs old
Toyota supra NA 225bhp
19Yrs old
Twin turbo supra 400bhp
23Yrs old
Nissan 200sx
Nissan skyline r32 gts-t
And now
MR2

what I'm trying to point out is insurance companies share infomation and I have found car history works in your favour.

i would definetly go for a NA anyway i don't need a turbo.

i wonder what i can expect to pay at 24 new driver on a mk 2.... i know its not going to be pretty

what are they like on the back end? do they step out easy? i know my mark 1 used to be pretty good at keeping the back end under control (private land)

My insurance company (direct line) wouldn't insure me on my Turbo unless i was over 25, so good job i am! its a little more than my last mr2 which was an auto (non-turbo) and that cost the same to insure as a smart car. Id phone around with a few registrations of cars that your interested in and see who gives you the best deal. Be careful when declaring any mods though :-$

^^Yes it was. i had a 3.2 Jag before the smart and was gutted to find that the insurance was exactly the same.
