Where's my thermostat at?

Post by N9THX »

Whereabouts is the stat on my '95 Turbo?
Just ordered one but not sure where it lives?
A few searches mention removing the oil filter, is this right?

Not the easiest of places to get to, under the exhaust manifold.

It's a lot easier than that picture shows, or you'd imagine.

With the engine stone could, obviously, undo the filler cap on the coolant neck, then do it back up again. That'll remove any pressure inside the system, and prevent excess coolant loss.

Use a small 1/4" drive wrench and a short extension bar with a 10mm (I think) socket on the end and undo the two nuts, being careful not to drop the lower one!

Pull the housing towards the firewall so it comes free of the studs. Remove old thermostat and install the new one. The new one should have a small hole with a kind of bobble ended pin in it. Places that uppermost when you put it back in. Now replace the housing, doing the nuts up and fill it back up with coolant. As long as you've done the filler cap up after releasing the pressure, it acts as a kind of vacuum to prevent too much coolant coming out when you remove the old thermostat. I think I lost maybe 1/2-3/4 litre of coolant at most.

Shouldn't take you more than 20-30 minutes at most.

Also bear in mind that the photo is a Rev2, the Rev3 doesn't have the oil filter mounted on the oil cooler, so it won't be in your way.

You will have to contend with the intercooler and the aircon compressor though ;)

Be interesting to see if there's one in at the minute.

There's never been a temp prob in the few months i've had the car although i've noticed it's always running cool unless in very slow traffic.
