Check your system hasn't any airlocks around the heater matrix first.

Also check your coolant system is full and not leaking and also that the water pump is pumping

surely if it has an air lock or the pump has failed youll find it'l be over heating ridiculously, coolant temp wise, which indirectly effects the heater temp..

on the n/a thermo housing is located just below the tb.

it was raining so could check properly but they are normaly attached via 3 or so 10mm nuts, pop the old thermo out, and re affix.

Look up how to bleed an MR2 and all will be revealed (regarding checking up on air locks).

You will need to know the bleeding process for when you replace the thermostat anyway.

If you know there's no leaks and the system is still full, you wont have an airlock either really, so continue with the thermostat replacement, which is the most likely culprit anyway really.

... And a tb is a throttle body...

How long you had the car? Watch the temp gauge carefully after replacement if this is the first properly cold day since you bought the car (i.e. thinking along the lines of has previous owner removed thermostat or forced it open to hide a overheating problem).

that is what is should do! search google/imoc/mr2oc for radiator change. all the ins and outs of bleeding is the same apart from replacing the rad :thumleft:

And for the record, the thermostat housing's nowhere near the throttlebody. It's on the corner of the block nearest the driver's side air intake, where the aircon pump / intercooler are.

The MR2 has a complex cooling system (probably 20 metres more coolant pipe than most cars) and plenty of places for air to get trapped. The bleeding procedure is also complex and has to be followed properly. The long and short of it is, on most cars the bleed point on the radiator is high, on the MR2 it isn't so you can't *just* use gravity to bleed air out.

Also airlocks only tend to show when stationary in traffic, the cooling system is good at cooling due to the volume of coolant (13L or so) so it's only when the car gets really hot that overheating strikes.

No it's not! It's just different to other cars. You just need 2 bits of 5mm hose. Do this, except just top it up rather than filling. Make sure you use the same type of coolant that's in there already - don't mix different types of coolant.

It's easy mate. it just looks a big job.

Basically you open the front bleed point with tube attached if it's the stock rad. Open the heater matrix bleed point with tube attached. open the rad cap and watch what happens.

Because the front and rear are both open to atmosphere this should let any air escape.

Keep pouring in coolant untill the tube coming from the rad starts to fill with fluid. the fluid should only rise to the same height as the rad cap in the engine bay. Let it settle for a few mins then see if you need anymore.

I do mine with the rear of the car higher than the front so to make the pipes underneath not horizontal, easier to get air out in my opinion but probably makes no real difference.
