[Mk2] [Generic] Caliper Slider Pin: Rubber O-Ring

Post by malcster »

Hi guys,

My front caliper has begun to bind again, I took them it off and free'd it off again - looks like the lower slider pin was siezed, and the rubber o-ring type arrangment on the end of the slider was worn and twisted.

I think new o-rings are cheap from Toyota, but at the moment I have put it back together without the O-ring in place until I get some ordered up, basically because I couldn't get the slider pin in without it popping off.

Anyway - my question is:

What are they for?
Why are they only on the bottom slider pin?
Are they really necessary?
Will I have any problems running without one for a few days?

And finally, what grease is best for the slider pins?

I used Castrol LM grease last time, but I noticed that it had begun to dry up a little at the end. I know Copper grease is a no-no for moving parts like this, so maybe that black CV-Joint grease?

Thanks in advance!

For future reference use the proper Toyota brake grease, anything else seems to 'swell' the rubber making the caliper stick

i have always wondered about the grease to be used. I cant see why you cant use CV grease, since its relatively high temp and it does not cause damage or swelling to the rubber CV boots (and the stuff gets all over the inside of them)?

im willing to be educated on this if i am way off :)

It is probably ok to use but why would you want to ? it's maybe a bit cheaper but you know the Toyota stuff will work without issue.
