Need to renew rear tyres but want something different.

Post by N9THX »

At the minute i have:
17x8 on the front with 205/40/17
17x8 on the rear with 215/40/17

To be honest the front tyres seem far too narrow for the rim and look stretched. The rears are less stretched but still don't come to the edge of the rim. What would be the ideal tyre for the rears?

I've been looking at 235/40/17 and 245/35/17 but not sure if there are any issues with clearance fitting either?

Advice please :-k

I'd be tempted to put the rears on the front and go for the 235/40 on the 'new' rears (I think a 20mm difference is a nice neutral set up but you may want it safer with a bit more understeer built in... if so keep a 30mm difference), both choices will fit OK on a 8" rim. Better stagger on the rubber and will fill the rim better in both cases. I'd also get some 12mm hubcentric spacers on the rear to replicate the staggered look the oem wheels of course have and widen by a fraction the rear track. Just better check that won't require an arch roll... you don't say what offsets your wheels have so don't know if they'll rub, or catch.

245x40 in the rear or 235x40 as suggested. I have 215x40 on the 8inch front and it looks pants not to mention didn't protect the rim when I drove up against the kerb ](*,) #-o

Also as Highwaystar says watch the offset of the wheels, you don't want to cut up the tyres :(

kerbs! ruined the front nearside wheel, the spokes touch the kerb before the rims!

Think i'll go 215's front and 235's back. Are the spacers safe to use? I used to fit them on minis i had and they always put extra pressure on the bearings.

I've run 15mm spacers on my rears for about 4/5yrs now and though I have had to change one bearing that was on the way out before I'd put them on. Get hubcentric ones and you should be fine. It'll look (and feel) way better.

Just had a reply from a tyre place who suggested fitting 225/45/17's as they're the most common size for 17x8j wheels, also he said i might have issues with rubbing on the suspension if i fit 235/40/17's.

Won't 225/45's look like balloons compared to my 205/40's on the front?

Are 225's on the front really that bad,I've got 215/40's on my 8 inch front, works fine but 225's would look a little nicer?

Unless you can find the offsets of the wheels we can't answer whether they'll rub or not... and nor can any tyre dealers.
What I can tell you is you either want a 215 front with 235 or 245 rears or a 225 front with either a 245 or 255 rear. It's the stagger that is most important... either a 20mm or 30mm difference (depending on handling preference). Obviously the 225 front option with the corresponding wider rears means you're more likely to get rubbing somewhere but as said it's impossible to say for sure unless you can get the offsets.
If you go for a 20mm difference get the same profile front and rear. If it's a 30mm difference you ideally want a 5% higher profile on the fronts.
