Debatable. It provides no downforce (as it's not an aerowing), however I think it is a functional spoiler and provides some rear end stability at speed.

What were you consideering replacing it with? I can't think of anything less ostentatious than the Mk1 spoiler. Don't leave it without as it looks truly pap IMO.

I'd like to try some kind of duck tail spoiler along the boot lid. Maybe with a vertical lip/flap along the rear edge.

I'm not sure the curvey organic look would go with the very wedge like body though.

no disrespect to you but." YUK".

found an old bmw one on ebay thats just a lip on the rear of the boot.

not going to race the car so i can't see it being a major problem if i put something smaller on the back.

 None taken. It's not quite the same anymore but it does kinda grow on you. I have moments of love/hate for it. 8-[

Have a look at mk2 escort versions. Some very nice, very cheap and very light GRP lips available. Also available in black plastic, carbon or alloy depending how flush one feels.

Have you considered 'adapting' the stock spoiler? Maybe removing the sides and centre supports so the leading edge sits flush with the boot? Then a bit of fibreglassing and some captive nuts or threaded rivets inthe right place to hold it on via the stock mounting holes. :-k

Much much much cheaper versions available. Just have a search for mk2 escort spoilers. BUT £135 for carbon is tres cheap. Far too expensive to chop up though.

From the aero knowledge I know of the Mk1, (though I'll admit I've not analysed it in-depth) the rear spoiler does provide some stability in cross winds when there is heavy wind, helping the rear gain some traction. The boot lip pictured is something I once considered myself (as my Peugeot had it so was going to take it off when I scrapped it to fit to the Mk1) but they're really designed for hatchback cars (again to help in crosswinds) and so will be totally ineffective on a Mk1 as the rear quarterlight region is significantly (in terms of relative distance compared to size of spoiler etc) further away. There will be a bit of stability aid from the boot lip, but the difference will be negligible; only slightly better than having a spoilerless boot. (though IMO it will at least look better than completely spoilerless)

Again also considered it... ;)
Not really worth it on the Mk1. An active front spoiler on the other hand... :D

Yep. And our headlight motors would do well enough for the actuator motors for such a thing too! (a spare set, obviously!)
