Repairing a boot floor where a Boot Mounted I/C has been - doable? Worth it?

Post by bluesmoke »

Guy only wants £100 for this, and it would be great for my reshell, if it wasn't for the Boot Mounted Intercooler hole.

I don't want a BMIC in my car as it's not powerful enough and I would always want to retain use of my boot.

But I'm stuggling to find a shell, this is dirt cheap, and he reckons he could weld it up easily enough. I'm just not sure that I'd be happy having a chopped up boot floor.

There's no holes in the firewall though.

Anybody else taken on something like this? I could always get someone to weld in the boot floor from my crashed car I guess but it seems a lot of hassle.

if it's done properly I can't see it being a problem. Just has to be strong, the carpet will cover any less than perfect marks?

I had same problem when I bought my car, just cut a floor out of another one and welded it in. Can't see its been done either.

Ok guys thanks for this.

If I have a new boot floor welded in though, the welds won't break and have my cargo fall out the bottom will they? That's my only concern! The shell is dirt cheap at £100 though.

When you cut the floor out your old car, just cut it out as close to the walls as you can, that way, when its fitted over the hole, it wont fall through will it. plus it wont look like its been patched up either.

if it's welded by a monkey then yes it will fail but by someone who knows what they are doing, no the welds will hold beyonf the rest of the metal work round them ( i can't remember why but it was something I remember being told when I was doing welding some 20years ago)

If you were to have a new boot floor welded in, as long as the welder was competant this should never be a problem, however, you could chop out the boot floor from another shell and leave the remainder of the boot floor in that shell there, make sure the remainder of the boot floor is solid and rust protected, then put in the new boot floor, thus it cannot fall out as its actually resting ontop of the origional, weld in place and weld from underneath as well to prevent water from getting between the two, also rust protect again!!
This would be simpler and if the welds weren't quite as strong as you'd like you would never have to worry about the boot floor falling out.

However this may be deemed a bodge! But if done properly either way will be fine! \:D/

EDIT: Beaten to it!
