[Mk2] [NA] Active Audio Wiring Mess

Post by psummers »

Hi, I've just bought a 1995 Mk2 Rev3 N/A with the active audio system (2 subs behind seats). The car came with a sony CDX-GT50UI that had not been wired in. After removing it I discovored why; the wiring was an absolute mess! Ive tried to tidy it all up and have spent all day seaching the internet trying to identify the wires.

I think I have the aerial wires identified:

Image

Pink and Blue - This needs connecting to the switched ignition +12v
Black and Red - This needs connecting to your stereos ATT
Green and White - Possibly the auto dim command wire? Not sure

Then there are two large grey cables with clusters of wires in them that have been cut open and the wires cut.

This is the first one:

Image

All the cables have been cut and it doesn't go into any connectors. Is this the cluster of wiring on the right of this diagram:

This is the second grey cable:

Does this relate to the second cluster of wires shown in the diagram linked above but the earth is green instead of brown?

Then there is also this connector behind the dashboard that I am unsure as to what it is for:

If anyone could identify the cables it would be a real help. If you were feeling especially helpful you could also enlighten me as to how to connect it to the headunit, the connections are shown on this pdf:

Update:

This is what I've identified tthe wires as so far, so idea if its correct or not:

Image

Pink and Blue - Aerial power needs connecting switched ignition +12v
Black and Red - Remote for aerial needs connecting to your stereos ATT
Green and White - Don't know

Image

Blue - Right Rear Speaker +
White - Front Left Speaker +
Red - Front Right Speaker +
Black - Mute
Brown - Right Left Speaker +
Yellow - Beep?!
Green - Second Ground

Image

White - Continuous Power Supply
Green - Earth?
Black - AMP+ Aerial Control
Red - Switched Power Supply

I have wired my headunit up according to this but the head unit won't turn on. The speakers do 'pop' when I turn the key in the ignition though. Not sure if that is a good or bad thing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

EDIT - Sorted most of it out now. The main problem was the earth, I ended up just rewiring a new one.

I don't know if it's the same as a rev 2, I suppose it is if all the wires are the same colour. I got a constant whining noise from mine when then engine was on so I just connected random loose wires together until the noise stopped. Don't know if I should reccomend doing that but thats how I sorted mine out.

farting fizzing hissing and weird noises as mentioned above

Mine did that, pain in the proverbials. I fixed it by running a new clean earth from the head unit to the car body. Likewise, one aftermarket head unit would not power up without a new earth.

Hope that helps.

That's what I ended up doing in the end as well. Now the head unit is on all the time, even without the keys in the ignition, but I can live with that!
