Front strut brace - sunroof storage?

Post by jb007 »

Im after a front strut brace to try and tighten up the front end a bit. Problem is I take my sunroof out all the time at the slightest hint of sun. Im guessing storage in the frunk is impossible with a straight strut installed?

Is there one with a 'kink' in or one that raises slightly up?

Problem!! :-k

Yes there is, the original ones fitted to 87+ AW11's with a sunroof had one.

It has a kink/curve in it so you can still store the sunroof in the frunk. It has a welded on sunroof-holding-point, which replaces one of the 2 currnetly mounted in the car.

Also: the frunk conver is a slightly different, but your current one will also fit, only needs to be pressed down a little bit when fitting the sunroof-strutbar ;)

Having done some research I thought it was only australian mk1b's sunroof models that had this 'special' strut brace? I guess sourcing one will be timely and expensive. ah well i will prob forget it.

I suppose I could store the sunroof behind the passenger seat, but my speakers live on the floor there. bu88er it, ill think of something else to play with!

put a post on toymods, you never know!

You could always make one, use th e ends from a std AW11 tbar and weld in a new bar to your desired shape.

you're right in thinking that there is a genuine front strut brace that will allow storage of the sunroof but as it was never a UK option if you wanted one you'd have to source one from a country where they were an option, I seem to remember that the kink in them is handed to whether is LHD or RHD drive cars too so you need a RHD sourced one (Japan Australia etc.)
I did at one stage plan to make one up out of 2 UK spec ones cutting and welding them together, but just like the lazy sod I am just used to wrap the sunroof in an old towel and put it into the rear bootspace

quik fleabay search and here's a US spec LHD one

i have only had my car a few months and have only ever stored the roof panels behind the seats.

Can you safely store the roof panels in the frunk? and if so what is the best way to protect them.

The black metal edging was damaged on both my roof panels, a large dent half way along. this is a commom problem i have been told.

The cause is by the bottom retaining bolt that holds the staps behind the seats. These staps are there to hold them but can also damage them as well.
i have managed to find a better pair now so don't want to damge these :thumleft:

on a sunroof car you can store the sunroof in the frunk, on a T Bar car the T Bar roof panels store behind the seats

Right thanks for info guys, will keep my eyes peeled. Yet ANOTHER reason why I wished my 25k mile super find was a t-bar, but hey i wouldn't find the same car again with t-bar anywhere so im happy. The sunroof model is lighter anyway and my engine is mk1a so I have the best combo from what ive read.

If anyone hears of a suitable brace for sale, remember me and shout me out please, cheers
