MR2 Turbo Insurance. Help?

Post by Project_AW11 »

Hey there guys,

I have had a Rev 3 NA for over a year now and love it but have always wanted the Turbo. Im in a situation where i have some extra money and a Rev 3 Turbo could be on the cards.

However i cant seem to find any insurance to cover me for less than 2.5K!

Im currently paying £750 for my NA and at that time i could have got a turbo insured at £1500ish.. Has insuranced changed a lot since?

Im currently 20, have two years on a full licence, and 3 years no claims, no points, no accidents, no anything. I only require TPTF not fully comp.

Anyone got any advice for me or examples of what they are paying? Or am i being totally unrealistic and need to wait till im 21.. :pale:

Cheers guys

Being under 21 with a turbo means mazzolia I'm afriad.

The number of companies willing to quote is greatly reduced so any quotes you will get will be not steep, fing vertical.

Being 21-25 makes it a little easier but still not realistic.

Iam 35 with max ncd, good area and clean licence and its £430ish.

If you have tried the normal suspects, Sky, A Plan, Aflux and a couple of "High Performace" companies, then thats about it.

Is the car garaged?? cat 1 alarm etc..?? as these all help to bring insurance down, but if you are in a "bad" post code area you will always struggle,im 25 and pay £360 fully comp on a rev3 turbo :thumleft:

Foxy-stoat, yeah i had a feeling that would be the case... Ill try some of those companies too.

Tubby, yeah im using all of them to try and bring it down. Area code is low risk.

Its just I know there are people out there my around age and even less with tubbys :-k
Tell me how you guys are doing it!

Maybe on-line mistakes with incorrect info?

When I was getting quotes online, I put in the reg number and it brought up MR2 T-Bar GT. Now if I "didnt know any better" I could of finished the quote like that as my MR2 is a T bar and is a GT, and paid half of what I am paying now. Only by inputing the details properly and selecting the Turbo model did he churn out a high premium. I got insured by Sky in the end all mods declared.

I would only become unstuck if I was to claim, but techincally I wouldnt be insured in that event. Obviously I could drive around for years saving money on insurance if I never had a claim and noone would be any the wiser, I can still get tax as normal and my car would show up as insured if Mr Plod did a check, I would only get found out if they were clued up on the car or if I hit another driver/person, but thats not how I roll.

So if you do get a very cheap quote, I'd always look into it and make sure they know what they quoted on as all MR2 turbos are imports and get registered as all sorts of things by the DVLA.....on my log book the date of registaration is the same as import, so my rev1 H reg MR2 could have a T reg number plate.

Hi,

I'm afraid it is not something my company can help with, we have fairly strict age criteria for MR2 Turbos.

As above, Flux may be your best bet.

been there, done that. 20 y/o, 3 years of full licence, 3 years unusable no claims, no points or accidents and a good postcode. best main stream quote i had was adrian flux, 3.5K, follow by 4.5k, then 7k. couldnt get any other quotes.

in the end i went with competition car insurance as a road risk motorsport vehicle on 1000 limited miles third party only. that came to £900. an extra 1000 miles was £200, TPFT was an extra 300. they dont care about mods, i have 23 declared. also they will mirror your no claims minus 1 year if your no claims are unusable.

Cheers guys!

Yeah i understand what you mean foxy, but i cant really risk it.

And to that guy whos posts got deleted  Thanks for your input, but to me it sounds wayyy too dodgey... In my mind the insurance has to be pretty legit. i mean the only thing i might forget is a small mod or two... Which i fully understand the possible dangers.

Dantheman, what is this competition car insurance all about? What do you need to qualify? Might be one option..

i might be able to help, im 20 and recently had a rev3 turbo

elephant, bell and admiral are all the same company but sometimes give different prices so try all 3

add two low risk named drivers onto the policy

say yes to driving an other car on a regular basis

instead of going 3rd party go fully comp and put the excess up full (works out cheaper than going 3rd party)

mine cost around £1k

Do people really go by on-line quotes? I got quoed near £9,000 (best price) per annum recently on-line for an Aristo, did it purely for shits and giggles. My current insurers want £500'odd or it per anum. Gues which policy I took.

stuartswan, your the man! This is exactly what i was looking for, i knew there was people out there doing it.

Did an online with bell, everything honest, travel to place of work, kept on drive, two low risk named drivers (gran-parents), gunna have to tick the non modified box though...

Just Over £1000 :thumleft:

I shall be phoning to comfirm details are correct today, thanks everyone!

FWIW I used Elephant and they weren't bad but I wouldn't use them again.

I was highly suspicious that they don't understand what the turbo MR2 is, and while your policy says import turbo on it (which you can hold them to) their system doesn't internally differenciate. This would mean they'd make claiming even more difficult and complicated than they would anyway, once they realise about their ballsup.

They also don't insure modifications like for like.

Elephant was by far the best for me!!!

Very easy getting insurance at 20-25 regardless of Foxystoat says :) :)

I was 22 when i got my Rev 3 turbo, it was £500 to insure roughly! fully comp.

It then went to around £350 a few years later.

I bought another one at 27 and again it as £350ish. fully comp.

My occupation brought mine down quite a bit, so play with your occupation a little......... dont lie, but maybe try one more favourable! :)
