Toyo t1R's wobbly??

Post by sticks »

has anyone here put these on the back of their tubby?got em yesterday for mine and ive never felt so nervous taking bends in my life.the car pulls from left to right when accelerating in a straight line.when you go around a bend and straighten up the wheel the car wobbles.i dont feel safe at all.and before that i had 2 different cheap tyres on there which were like slicks they were so bad an the car still handles great.cant understand this as ive had t1r's on a few cars an thought they wer a solid enough tyre.but they feel like remoulds on my 2.anyone else have any experience with these or is there somethin that was done wrong that might be causin this?cheers.

not had them on the rear, but they will be better than the cheapo tyres. maybe the increased grip is highlighting some poor alignment. take it for a fresh alignment then see how it feels.

You'll need to leave it about 300 miles to get them scrubbed in... they either move about on the new high tread blocks, take a while for temperature cycles to firm up the sidewall or it takes ages to get rid of the slippy lubricant which helps the tyre out of the mould. Either way I've had about 3/4 sets now and it's always the same with the rears... just wait awhile and put some miles on them and all will come good.

I set my pressures to:
32 front
36 rear
But always have 4 psi difference I'd say.
Get a 4 wheel alignment done with new tyres - ALWAYS !
Allow a couple of hundred miles until they are scrubbed :)

Lastly, you bought a full set so they are all the same right ?

Yep, I understand it's not always easy to do all of them but along with the brakes they are the most critical aspect on a car/bike.
It's really worth changing all of them so they match, then at least when one axle set needs replacing, you are still buying the same spec tyres.
You could always just sell the ad07's for a few quid, always someone who'll want them I'm sure :thumleft:

But definitely get the 4 wheel alignment sorted (£50-£70) and potentially a bit more air in there as others had complained that they were squishy otherwise.

What? There is no need to replace front and rear at the same time. As long as the fronts are the same and the rears are the same it makes no difference between f/r at all. [-(
I asked God for a bike, but I know God doesn't work that way. So I stole a bike and asked for forgiveness.

No need for alignment checks with new tyres so long as the new wheel/tyre is properly balanced... alignment and geo is a separate issue which should be checked at least annually anyway. For just new tyres all you need is them balancing. As for different rubber f/r..... ideally you'd have the same compound all round but don't change for the sake of it if it feels OK. Just wait till the fronts are ready to be replaced and then stick the toyos on.

PS If you still find it wallowy a bit more pressure in the rears (I go to about 38/40psi... max pressure minus 10%) should help just till the tyres are properly scrubbed.

You guys can do what you want in your own cars, no worries, I'm just saying what I do and it's up to the OP what they do.

I agree about the wobbly feeling. Always had proxies on my mr2's. To solve this l run

34psi front
38psi rear

Car feels much better.

The T1R is my number-1 hated tyre on an MR2.... they feel terrible on a track day, and frankly are nothing special on the road.

If you are looking for a cheap trackday tyre, that in my opinion is actually a really really good all round tyre - Try the Marangoni Zeta Linea. I think you can only get them in 16" and upwards.

I paid £206.50 for a complete car set back in 2008, they impressed me both on road and on track - I've been through most MR2 fitment tyres in the last 10 years

I had this with T1Rs on the rear of my tubby. Felt like the rear axle wasn't attached to the car when coming out of a bend!
It'll take a month for them to settle and behave like proper tyres.

I know I won't be getting them again. As someone already mentioned, they are a bit poo on track too - disintegrate too quickly.

Think I may try the Fedral RSRs next or something similar.

P.S. If you can stretch to it - I highly recommend Adven Neova's (AD08 I think)
