[Mk2] [Turbo] boot mount intercooler installation

Post by n426ams »

hi there,

i have purchased a boot mount intercooler for my rev3 tubby.

i understand how to run the pipe work but what is the best way to get fresh cold air to pass through the intercooler???

i see many pics of cars running boot mounts but none good enough to see how it is done :(

any advise or pics of installs will be much appreciated :!:

cheers

There's a few different ways to go about this. Search 'bootmount' and have a closer look at some members setups.

To give you an idea you can scoop air in from the bottom of the car or even the top if you attach say a Subaru Impreza(or silimar) scoop on to the boot. Another way is to let air in from the side vent into the boot. A decent set of fans to help air through the cooler would also be a good idea. Something else to consider while planning is a path for airflow to exit the boot!

basically mine is feed from the top through the impreza scoop the floor is cut out with a vent out the bottom which is open at both ends (idea being the air passing under the car passes through the under vent creating a venturi effect causing air to be pulled through intercooler) as for air form the side there is rubber parts that stop air from engine bay side vents passing into boot remove or cut these out & this will allow air to pass into the boot also block air vents in corners of the boot to stop the air passing out behind the bumper, some also block d/s side vent with a blanking plate to stop air passing into engine bay , im not shore about this myself :-k i also have to fans under the intercooler to pull air through :thumleft:
here is my post for you if you need any more pics let me know :thumleft:

Like said above, i'm not using the scoob scoop though, just the side vents, with drivers one blocked off, rubber boots cut out, IC sat at about 30 degrees with floor cut out and 2 12" spal fans pushing through it. Oh, and an aluminium rear facing vent under boot floor directing air out & stopping heat rising from exhaust area.

Must remember to block off the bumper vents, keep meaning to do that!

i was wanting to put a foreward facing scoop under the car and channel the air through the intercooler and cut out between the rear lights and channel the air to there as an exit point. would this work??

Yes, that will work as well. Been done that way a few times, Chris Isle managed it on here to over 600 bhp. I just prefered to use cleaner air from side.

imo this is the best way to do a bootmount properly, i have also done it this way, i did alot of research into it before i even bought the intercooler itself, there are a alot of veryations, i looked into the scoop catching air from underneath but after reading into the major air turbulance after the cross member i decided against as said its not goin to be the cleanest of air compaired to the side vents, as said i pulled the rubbers out the iside of the side vents, put them on a sheet of ally marked around cut out to the exsact template and bolted them on the inside to stop air from entering the engine bay and only into the boot, with regarding the cooling of the engine it is in my understanding that aerodynamically the air enters the engine bay from underneath and out the top so i also have engine lid fans to suck the air out :thumleft:

heres my build thread might giv you sum more ideas :thumleft:

If you still have your boot carpet removed, and not done a fancy job like Nick, then look literally at the bottom corners of the boot, standing at back of car they will be right at each extreme left and right as close to back as you can get. They are about 50mm/2" by around 100mm/4" (working completely off memory!!)

Best way to do it is to cut the floor in the boot in a rectangle across 3 sides. Towards the back of the car and the sides, but leave the edge of the rectangle towards the cockpit. Then bend the metal up and mount the intercooler under the lip and support it with a bracket so that it hangs down low under the car.

This gets the most natural airflow as it runs under the car. It will hit very hard and will get a far better even coverage. The inlet side of mine is clap cold even after plenty of high boost. Just make sure you have 2 12" spal fans with and override switch for traffic jams.
