[Mk2] [NA] Chassis & Handling upgrades - bit of a shopping list req.

Post by RobPhoboS »

Hey guys !

Well I own a raucous little rev 3 NA, it's mainly used on the road for short trips to work and some fun on the weekends. It'll also see some more use on the track this year as well.
Seeing as it's an NA, I know the power won't be fettled with much due to costs but maybe in the distant future I'll uprate a few internals.

Currently on the engine side of things it has a jmec ECU (8200 red line), jap spec perf induction kit, straight through exhaust and soon a japspeed manifold. And some other bits, strut bars front and rear, yellow stuff pads, RBF 600 brake fluid, T1R tyres.

So for now I'll be concentrating on the handling of it, which I think is more important anyway.

It's looking like I'll be picking up a set of BC coilvers next week but I also want to upgrade a few other parts. So I'm just looking for some names of products, rough prices and any good places to order from.

Anti Roll Bars.
Drop Links.
Under body bracing ?
Powerflex bushes ?
Carbotech pads (direct from their euro suppliers).
New discs.
Brake Master Cylinder Stopper Kit (japspeed)
Engine mounts.

Is there anything else that I'm missing ?

off topic but does your chip allow you to pull till 8200? i have an na and find it doesnt start to pull till 5000 so something like that would be ideal, im a total novice when it comes to engine mods so wouldnt have a clue

Ideally I need uprated camshafts with a duratio of 264°, as really their isn't much gain from that, well, not that I can tell. But what is very handy is for blipping down through the gears on a track day, far less likely to smack into the limiter now.

Right, those Ultra racing parts are available from:
www.automac.co.uk
Net Gross
Fender FD3-043 £75.60 £88.83
ARB AR20-102 £129.60 £152.28
Front lower LA4-145 £75.60 £88.83

I couldn't see the powerflex kit on that Rallynuts site but what about the one on Sbits ?
'SBITS - High & Tight Motorsports ProThane Suspension Bush Kits'
Or is that not required with coilovers ?
(sorry, tiny bit confused and nackered  )

One thing I dont see listed but would be well worth doing is a trip to a vehicle geometry specialist to get your car set up properly once all the above is completed.
http://www.wheels-inmotion.co.uk are where I go and are very good, but Im sure there are others too if these are too far away.

Hiya mate. I've been in a very similar boat to you myself. I have a rev1 n/a as a daily driver and after ex, decat and induction wondered what I would do with suspension upgrades.
You can see what I chose in my garage but my advice would be this... If you want to save cash get all your mods together and fit in one session. If you want to get the set up right do it in stages so you can feel how the car is changing and adjust your other mods accordingly. I did top mounts, struts and springs in one go then adjusted my arb decision based on how it then felt. Improvements in some dynamics pointed out failings in others (if I did it again I'd do my bushes and balljoints at the same time as the stuts). In short leave the arbs till last of the oem parts to replace and only then if additional underbody stiffening is required buy that. If it's too stiff it'll be a nightmare on poor roads... say 99% of the time.

R.

PS. And another advocate of a good geo set up.

I didn't put WIM down as it was an obvious thing to me but good point for other people who may not realise that.

Well I'm currently awaiting for my BC's to turn up, and I have the Whiteline ARB's waiting to go on as well, then off to WIM. 3S also changed my front engine mount to a turbo one as well, as the NA one doesn't seem to do anything.
