Rear wheel bearing UK/Euro spec vs. JDM/Tubby

Post by PeterRST »

My 'Two is having its nearside rear wheel bearing replaced. I went to pick it up earlier but the guy had already left and another mechanic said that he couldnt fit the brake caliper as the new bearing was too wide.

I measured the old bearing he had removed and it absolutely fits the specifications of the new bearing. Anyone got any idea what could have possibly gone wrong?

The guy in the workshop is quite pi$$ed too as my car is blocking his ramp...

BTW: The reference number I used is 90369-43008 and the car is a 1992 Rev2 Tubby.

same part number for 8912-9908 Bearing (for rear axle shaft LH )SW20 so it's the right part. Guess he should try fitting it again

I'm talking about the actual wheel bearing in the hub, not the drive shaft bearing. Still, according to ToyoDIY I've got the correct one.

All the dealers like Fensport/Camskill, etc. don't seem to make a difference between Turbo and N/A either.

that's the description for the part number you listed, straight from the toyota info which is where toydiy gets it from

I'm confused :?

Assembly procedure is:

Press bearing into hub from rear
Fit snap ring (if snap ring fits, bearing is fitted correctly)
Press in hub flange from front
Fit to car, at the same time pushing driveshaft through from rear.
Fit and torque d/s nut
Fit lock washer and split pin.

If he got that far, everything is fitted correctly, and caliper and mounting bracket will simply bolt into place.

Hmm this is weird. I'm not familiar with that process at all so can't really comment. But I guess I'll just have to wait till Monday... :(

BTW: Peter, you probably even know the car. It's a tin-top Rev2 Tubby that used to belong to a chap called Matt from Nottingham. :)

Some places press the bearing while supporting the hub on the caliper mounts. Really not the way to do it, but this may have caused the caliper not to fit! <-- beacuse it bends the mounts #-o

That somehow sounds like it could indeed be the culprit... #-o

Are the hubs the same on all ABS cars? Or are there differences between Turbo and N/A or between different revisions?
