GTS Turbo

Post by SuperRedMR2 »

Right,

I've sort of come to like the turbo recently and what with my mk1 engine probably about to die, I have decided that over the summer I am going to pick myself up a GTS Turbo. I have found one with 66k for a reasonable price. Its a rev2 - As I am from the Mk1 club I have no idea what I'd be letting myself in for, as I've owned 2 mk1s in 5 years.

For a low mileage GTS would I be looking at any problems? I currently cover 300-400 miles a week for my daily job.

All advice needed.

What sort of problems do you mean ? Like fuel costs or general problems with the car ?

A low milage GT or GTS you should not expect any major problems , but like with any cars it depends what sort of life they have had. I would check exactly the same things you did buying your MK1. There is nothing in particular but i would be checking for play in the turbo shaft, this should be minimal. Happy hunting for your new two !!!

300 / 400 miles a week aint really gonna suit a 15 yr old SW20 turbo,
can be done but fuel costs will be high.

What he said ^^^^^^

The loud pedal on a turbo will hurt you more than the loud pedal on your MK1 i'm afraid plus you'll be using the Super-Unleaded fuel too.

If you look at other threads as to the miles to tank some members get and you'll be adding a fair bit on your travelling costs.

That aside, just read up on the buying guide:

http://www.imoc.co.uk/forums/kb.php?mode=article&k=49

How much you looking on spending? Theres a tip top black rev3 for £3.5k on here...looks like a good'un to me and SHOULD be snapped up chop chop.

The more turbos you look at, the more sheds you'll see i reacon. Try and buy one from a club member rather than the ebay-shed site.

If the car is sound, reliability will not be an issue.

However, 3-400 miles a week averaging 25mpg running VPower/Tesco99 should be enough to make anyones wallet cringe.

400 miles a week, wayyyy too much for a daily driver!

I get 35mpg in mine at the moment doing that mileage but thats obviously had an effect in the bowels of my engine.

I've got around £3k to spend. Its either turbo or something mundain. I want something fun for the summer not a boring car.

I'm doing 250 miles a week in mine. Just be vigilant in your maintenance, as obviously things will wear out faster.

I've got a '93 Rev 2. Its great! Petrol is expensive but every time you hit the accelerator you will love it and think its all worth it. Check the discs and callipers, and any knocking from the shocks. I've had to do all these bits on mine. I had a Mk1 back in 2001 and I don't think you will be disappointed with the GTS!

You spent £300 and only done a couple of 100 miles?????????????

I think you need to have a serious look at your car fueling system

Even my tubby can do 200 miles to £60 worth of petrol
