[Mk2] [Turbo] Gearbox removal...or not

Post by djpkins »

I'm trying to remove the gearbox from my donor rev 3 turbo, I have been studying CFAUN's car 13 site...which is just superb  but after removing all the bolt I still can't shift it...any advice would be very welcome...I have the engine tilted down towards the offside so it's not a case of it being jammed against the body...just seems like it's welded on.

If you have all the bolts out, it'll be stuck on the dowels.

There are two: 1 just over half way up the front (i.e. near the clutch slave cylinder), and 1 next to the large bolt, top/rear.

Gently ease a screwdriver in and lever, slowly opening the gap between bellhousing and block.

hi there

2 small bolts are difficult to spot

when under the car, to the near side of the sump is a black plastic flywheel inspection cover.

pop this off, you'll see the teeth of the fly wheel.

Inside this, are two small allen bolts which hold the sump to the gearbox.

it might be worth checking these?

I found my gearbox quite difficult to dislodge - but a few taps with a rubber mallet helped loosen it

cheers man...I got it off , as you say, with a bit of a tap and unwrap...now the tricky bit is gonna be getting the one off my car and this one on in it's place...it was easy to gain access to the one I have taken off the donor car as I had already removed lots of pipes , turbo etc without having to worry about reconnecting them all...I saw Luke at Pacificworks do it all in a day so I'm hoping that I can do it in 2...when I took the gearbox off I noticed there was no gasket or sealent on the bell housing, was yours the same?
