URGENT HELP NEED, making boost in neatral

Post by turrall1 »

i was driving last nite and the 2 just cut out, i tried to restart and the battery seemed to just have gone dead, i bumped her and she started but was very lumpy, i drove it home but it would accelerate then loose all power, the clocks would indicate rpms, ie engine was idiling when i tried to accelerate and then just kick in in irregular bursts, it used 1/4 of a tank of fuel to get 5 miles and when i got home the exhausts was glowing red but under the engine bay wasnt overly hot and the turbo manifold wasnt glowing, now the turbo is spooling in neutral, not everytime but it seems to get worst when is is slightly warmed up, then when it is hot it is all the time, somebody please help

I've moved this to the main MK2 forum as it's not really a Guru question.

could be an ignition issue. if its running but irregularly it could be random sparking. sending unburnt fuel down the exhaust will reduce fuel economy and may be igniting in the exhaust, heating it up. when did you last service your ignition system?

Thanks for the replies. Had it apart today and there's nothing blocking any intercooler pipes at all, and the inlet manifold seems clear. Although i can't see in the intercooler for any blockages. Even the intake and airbox are clear and nothing has any signs of damage.

Another thing i checked was the actual turbo, and although there's no excessive shaft play the intake wheel does not spin freely, and at some points feels slightly stiff. How easy should it spin? For example if i spin it should it keep spining for a second or not?
The ignition all seems in good working order and was only replaced about 2000 miles ago, dizzy cap rotor arm and spark plugs.

Danthemans nearly there... sound like a mechanical timing issue - unburnt fuel is going through to the turbo / exhaust.... It actually sounds like the timing belt has jumped a touch as you're struggling to keep the engine going and the loading up is actually spooling the turbo up.

First things to check is the diagnostics.... Bridge E1 and TE1 in the diagnostics box, just in case you have got an actual sensor problem.

I'd agree with Mech. timing. If the cams are out it will be a pig!
