Re: are spigot rings important?
you only need them if the hub is a different size.paul.

Re: are spigot rings important?
I currently have wheels that're located on the hubs just using the bolts.
Haven't had any problems yet but, TBH, I'm not really comfortable with it so I'm getting some aluminium spigot rings made up to suit.

Re: are spigot rings important?
They are not critical, but are used to ensure you're wheel is properly centered on the hub, because if its not, you can experience wheel vibration, slight handling issues, maybe uneven tyre wear in extreme cases.

I've used wheels without them before with no issues, just depends how
'lucky' you are when fitting them.
.
Try rotating the wheel when tightening up the wheel nuts, this should help center the wheel on the hub, but TBH, spigot rings are pretty cheap off Ebay etc.
so don't see a reason why you can't pop a set on.
They tend to come in generic O.D.
sizes, e.g.
73.1mm for most japanese aftermarket wheels.

Uhuh.

I use copperslip on the wheel-nuts then take care when tightening the nuts.
Basically, I fit one nut finger tight, give the wheel a bit of a jiggle, then do an opposite nut, give the wheel another jiggle and repeat until all 5 nuts are on finger tight before finally tightening them all.
I guess fitting a wheel would be much more
"idiot-proof" with spigot rings but I've never had any wheel wobble or anything else so far.

Re: are spigot rings important?
Yeah I would, I found my steering felt very wooly until I fitted spigot rings.

Mine cost about
£6 on ebay delivered, a real no brainer!

Re: are spigot rings important?
Agreed.
No advantage to not having them.
They centre the wheel on the hub properly
(hence reducing movement and thus vibration) and take a lot of weight off of the wheel nuts themselves which should only be taking lateral load.

i would have to dissagree with some of the suggestions but agree with the last post,

spiggot rings are imperitive to ensure your not putting any additional strain on the wheel nuts.
the weight of the car is in effect on the spiggot ring opposed to the wheel nuts, if
(like most after market wheels) you need these rings you should not run the car without them, else a nice sharp jolt can snap your wheel nuts/bolts and cause all sorts of issues.

several members of staff at my old job were given stiff repremands for the sale of wheels without the appropriate spiggots

If the weight of the car is on a tiny plastic ring then we should be quite concerned about it.

The ring is actually only there to ensure the wheel is fitted correctly.

Re: are spigot rings important?
Incorrect.
The spiggot rings do take weight off the wheel nuts which are there for lateral support
(holding the wheel
'in' to the hub).
The hub should be taking the weight not the wheel nuts and yes this is important.
If your wheels have a centre bore greater than 60.1mm you do need spiggot rings.

Re: are spigot rings important?
The wheel nuts / bolts are there to provide connection to the hub. The friction against the surface of the wheel and the hub creates the majority of the mechanical connection -the pre-load on the bolts affords that connection although the bolts take shear loads themselves also (bolts can't take much if any shear load compared to tension).
Get yourself some rings. I've been told they're only of use on the steered wheels -but found that duff info early on. Wheels should be centred where possible from the start.
I'm sure my local factor sells spacers and spigot rings -I had to argue a few times with wheel suppliers who quoted XX fitment but no spigot rings and eventually got them sent -the wheel should be hubcentric for the car from the start they offer it for if you're buying new IMO.
