Fuel system cleaners

Post by TheBaker »

Are these reccomended?

I saw them in halfords the other week and could do with improving my MPG(And I don't know the state of the fuel system, probs poorly like the rest of the car) thinking these might help I'm thinking of getting one, and I've got 600+ mile round trip this weekend. I'm just concerned if there could be any bad effects?

One thread from a search on google said it they could clean out the natural seals of the engine?

If so any product reccomendations?

And also, how much fuel does a 92 NA tank hold?

Thanks. :)

I used Redex fuel system cleaner last Friday and the difference was definately noticeable. My idle is a lot better and I feel a bit more torque in the low revs. :thumleft:

Fuel tank holds 55L - add the Redex to an almost empty tank and then fill it up.

I use Redex in all my cars -probably twice a year. It does work if you've not done it for a while and never had any problems using it.

Cheers guys.

Just put some Redex Advanced and a full tank in.

Hopefully it will improve the MPG a little, maybe see 200 miles a tank.

I have had a couple of cars which have appreciated a dose of injector cleaner.

Had a crx many years ago and had dieing revs issue. I put it in to a specialist garage and apart form clean the intake they put a couple of stp bottles into half a tank, they said it gives it a good clean that way

Had a golf gti and when you came to a stop at a junction the revs would die. Put some stp injector cleaner into half a tank, problem solved.

Since then I have always given my cars a dose every year as part of the service

vw main dealers use forte treatments i use them as engine flush and fuel cleaners in my taxis and with no bad side affects, all taxis in access of 400000 miles .
when i got my 2 i did a compression test
no1 153
2 151
3 146
4 151
i put a full bottle of forte injection system cleaner to a half tank of fuel,i checked compression about 2 weeks later and i now have 181 to 183 across all cylinders :thumleft:
i use these on a regular basis and i all ways add a flush before i drop the oil.
car now sold
most parts off gts chris

Well, I managed to do 25 miles plus a trip to Solihull from Edinburgh on a full tank inc the cleaner with still a bit left, gotta say I'm amazed.

It must be the slipping clutch with all the clutch work in the town driving that's burning all the fuel. :)

Will be interesting to see what it's like with town driving to see if it's really helped.
