[Mk2] [NA] Should engine check light illuminate when ignition is switched on?

Post by classicjoe »

When I turn my ignition on, should the engine check/fault light illuminate or not?

When I turn my ignition on I dont see it illuminate just wondering if there is a fuse for the bulb or it is not meant to light up.

is the engine diagnostics port (E1 TE1) the one in the engine bay on the drivers side to the rear? I tried the test but nothing was flashing up (engine check light) does the engine have to be warm as I just tried it from cold.

thanks

IIRC the check light should illuminate when the ignition is on then go out when the engine is started. No doubt somebody will point it out if I'm wrong. Could be a blown bulb if it's not lighting up.

Yes, the diagnsotics port is where you describe. The igniton has to be on but the engine off when checking for stored ECU codes. Doesn't matter if the engine is cold or warm :thumleft:

Did you just buy the car?

Removing the "check engine" and "check ABS" warning lights is one of classic "dodgy dealer" tricks.

I think the light should light up when ignition is on. ECU does it's checks, if all ok then goes out, this is when your supposed to start the car. If it stays on it means the checks have not been passed and you shouldn't start the engine if possible.

Glad it hasn't been tampered with deliberately anyway.

My dad bought a Vauxhall Omega a couple of years ago and somebody'd stuck a bit of tape over the ABS warning light so you couldn't see it on the dash.

4 new wheel sensors and about 20 hours of labour later, he wasn't at all pleased.

Yeah I would of hated if it had been disabled for some sinister reason. I would never sell a dodgy car to someone privately as I would hate being sold a lemon myself. If I wanted rid of a faulty car I would always trade in at a dealer, this way they know what they are buying and its sold as seen.

I've a mate who bought a MK2 NA with a fried alternator... that had the engine check, exhaust temp, no charge and power steering lights removed :o
