Wind noise...

Post by viperrr »

Hi all,

I've recentley noticed I'm getting a fair amount of wind noise from the very top corner of the driver's side window, where it seals with the B pillar and roof (I've a sunroof model).

I tried adjusting the door latch on the B pillar, but realised it only sits in one position. I also took the door card off to try and adjust the glass, but can't seem to do much but move it up and down a bit.

From the outside, when the door is closed I can push the top corner of the glass in a bit, which makes me think there must be a way to make it seal more solidly.

Is it a case of adjusting how the door is hanging on it's hinges? :-k

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,
Nick

Adjustment of the glass was covered in one of the tech articles on the old mk1 club site, it's about 2/3rds of ther way down:

Ahh thank-you.

I'll give it another try at the weekend, but I couldn't really see how it adjusts 'laterally' when I last looked.

Hi Nick,

This may help. When mine had wind noise/leaky windows it was suggested to me to smear vaseline on the rubbers. This give new live to the rubber and after a few smears (a few days apart) it starts to swell the rubber thus sealing it.

Up to you if you try it but it worked for me

I did it on the doors and sunroof rubbers.
Well happy.

Cheers Bod I'll give this a shot as my sunroof is getting a little loose too, and popping out slightly at motorway speeds

Actually vaseline tends to dry up the rubbers over a long period (I believe it's due to it being petroleum based?). Initially when I tried it on my Pug it helped but they've now cracked. A better option is silicon grease (you can get this in spray form easily) which is more friendly on the rubbers. I've been treating my window and T-bar seals with this for the last few years...

I was pointed in the direction of this last year:

...apparently, its the business...! :thumleft:

Worked a treat on my old Mk1 SC, anyway...used it round the doors, and the sunroof seals.......

I tried adjusting the window again, and also how the door sits on it's hinges. No luck getting the window to move laterally, so I don't think I've created a better seal by adjusting things.

I got some of the Halfords silicone lubricant, and will apply this as and when the weather permits.

I think I'll just have to accept this is a 20yr old car, so it's going to be noisy!
